Hi,

I did this test on B15, before B16 was released but it was buried in another thread. I have done the exact test in build 16 so you can have a side by side look at the tiff files. Later I will post tests showing what these files look like on the scopes in FCP as well.

B16 is not only cleaner but I like the color rendition much more. It seems much more true to the chart right out of the camera.

REDSPACE helps as what you are seeing the RED LCD is what you see in RED ALERT!. I am not trying to challenge with this test, but rather give people a real sense of how much the builds differ. Besides I had just done the B15 test so it made sense to redo it with 16 right out of the gate.

Kudos to the RED team for doing such a nice job with this camera build.

EDIT: I HAVE POSTED THE FCP WAVEFORM PICS TO THE SAME SITE AS WELL.
HERE YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH BETTER BUILD 16 THE LEVELS LOOK WHEN YOU OPEN IT IN FCP.
UNCOMPRESSED 10 BIT HD TIMELINE. 2K TIFFS STRAIGHT FROM RED ALERT.
THE FILES ARE PNG SCREEN GRABS OF FCP.

NOTE HOW 320 ISO peaks at 60 units in B15 but at about 70 units in B16.
NICE!

EDIT 2: I DID THE SAME THING WITH THE VECTORSCOPE AS WELL SO YOU CAN SEE THE VAST COLOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BUILDS.

Here are the parameters.

RED#758
NIKON 17-35 zoom@ 35mm F2.8
the chart is lit with a single light panel LED at 5600Kelvin
The meter is set to 320, incident light reading of 40 f2.8
The control frame is the 320 ISO .tiff
X-RITE Color Checker MUNSELL Color chart.
http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=820&Action=Specifications

Here is what I did.
Exposed clips at
320
400
500
640
800
1000
1280
1600
2000

Then I opened in RED alert and exported at each clip at the ISO it was shot at.

Then I reset the ISO to 320 for each clip and exported that. (Build 15 only)
recorded to CF.

No sharpening, no curves. no nothing straight out of the camera.

Latest release build of build 15 (2.2.5)
BETA Build 16 (3.1.2)

No rocket science here.

you can download the tiffs here in about 15 minutes.

Enjoy.

WOW. What a difference. The Macbeth is so much more accurately reproduced in 16.

Makes it hard to keep shooting 15. JIM?? Are you SURE we shouldn't do a commercial project on 16?

It really looks like there is a tint setting involved in the build 15 metadata - the color values are just so universally off. what do you think about the lack of saturation at higher ISO's?

I'd say you are seeing how good the NEW REDSPACE actually is. I am sure the build 15 tiffs were exported with old RED ALERT and with the REC709 Color space (which is very tricky to get correct).

I have attached a still of the 320ISO Build 15 loaded in NEW VERSION OF RED ALERT with REC 709 and REDSPACE.

It's not TINT at all, it's the difference in color space conversion. Pay Attention if you are finishing REC 709 which seems to give off the cartoon colors.

You're B16 was shot with the exact same lighting setup?

I'm assuming yes but wanted to double check because the values in the Waveform are wider in 16. It could be due to more color range in the color space of B16 or because to a lighting difference. The lighting looks uneven in the 16 tests and I noticed a general curve in value from the lighting and thought that might cause the increased range in the scale.

Really astonishing. Thanks so much for doing this test, very nice!

exact same meter and lighting used in both tests. Shot with the same camera before and after with 15 then 16.

what do you think about the lack of saturation at higher ISO's?

I think this is to be expected. with the noise floor so low you can expect that them image becomes washed out and undersaturated. I think that this responds more like film than any digital camera I have seen.

The difference between REC709 and Redspace is amazing, the bright colors have a better handle, thanks for the tests.
