Hi everybody!

I am looking for a B camera for my Red One (a smaller camera for close up) and I would like to know if anyone here have some experiences with a BMCC 2.5K and the new Panasonic GH4, my concern about BMCC 2.5K is the moire in the close up, and my concern about GH4 is the DSLR look, anyone has ever matched a BMCC with a red one?, what about the GH4?........and if someone has a better suggestion as a B camera i am all hears.

Thanks!

Gh4 is what I have, loving it so far. I will say that the speedbooster will be the ticket to opening up that camera for sure. Making the image all around better.

Here's my opinion. Take it for what it's worth. :-)

I wouldn't purchase the GH4. I've tested/had experience with it and while it produces a sharp (too overly sharp even on lowest sharpness setting) image, but it's VERY prone to rolling shutter and moire. The camera needs to be stabilized someway, somehow, otherwise jello presents itself. It's great in low light, though the over sharpening tends to create noise. Also a reminder that it has a M 4/3 sensor, which increases the crop factor, so wider lenses are mandatory.

Now the BMCC is bigger, and if you're gonna go that route, I would get the Blackmagic 4K Production Camera. Yea, the form factor isn't the greatest, but in my experience, produces a much better image than that of the GH4 and it has a global shutter. It also includes Davinci Resolve. It does record the consumer spec 4K at 3840x2160 whereas the GH4 records a true 4096x2160, but for me, the benefits in terms of overall quality far outweigh that slight output discrepancy. You also get the power of RAW with the BM camera.

There are a lot of people already in love with the GH4 but if I had to choose, I'd go the BM route.

good luck trying to buy a gh4 they are sold out everywhere :( Its bad when even Amazon has it on back order!!!

I guess a Scarlet isn't what you're after, when I read your suggestion. Is it because of the price point? What about a second hand one?

It is just going to be a B camera for close up, so the scarlet is too price for what is going to be used, GH4 looks nice specially for the size of the camera, but I am aware of the issues that Chris pointed out, the BM4K could be the better choice since it will allow me also to use it in a steadicam for fast movements but the FPN issue has killed that camera, and a firmware from blackmagic to resolve that problem for good probably never happened, the option to record 4K at 10 bit with an external recorded looks nice in the GH4, but I don't know if that option is going to increase the quality of the image. Has anyone here tried to match GH4 images with Red One? would like to know if in post you can make them looks close enough.

I've got a gh2 and it match together well with red one footage. i'm getting a gh4 as a b camera for my gimbal system soon. i'll try get a comparison together once it comes in

I have a R1MX and my B camera is a GH2 with Valkirie Hack. It matches very well with Red One footage: i agree with Russell.

Why not a second hand RED One MX for the B-camera? You could buy it, and then sell it, and not be out a single dollar if you buy reasonably well.

Jean, Russell,

Do you have any clip example in youtube or Vimeo mixing footage of the GH2 and Red One?.....I would love to see what you did with the GH2.

Thanks!

Too big Stephen, I need something smaller, I will use my Red One for narrative and the other camera for transitions, close up, and places where I can not go with my Red.

Marcel, this one is not mine, and it is not the best example for intercutted GH2 and Red, but it's a nice concept.

About R1MX as B camera, i think we really need something lighter for some shots, and for minimum budget the GH2 can do the job well.

Totally agree, we need something lighter, my Red One is my A camera and always be used for most of the narrative work, was Petrol the series intercutted with GH2 footage?, I checked and found out they used a Red One, but couldn`t see any GH2.....

From feedbacks i am getting from other forums i am close to choose the GH4 option, and by September we will have external 4k recorders with 10 bit.......

It's still not RAW. :wink5:

What about the 5d mark 3 with the raw magic lantern hack? For me, it's the best option, with the right lens (zeiss zf2) and the right settings, you can achieve some really serious things...
I'm totally agree.I have used 5D MIII rushs in my last project for some shot, because we need a camera lighter than my Red One. It's not perfect, but after color grading, the picture is perfectly insert in the movie.

Ive had 2 5D Mark III's fail during recording while under the "hack." Never again will I play with a hacked camera on any job. Too unreliable for me personally, even though I hear so many people loving theirs and it never failing.
