Avid to Scratch Workflow - reel names?

Dear all,

I'm preparing a workflow from Avid to Scratch and do have a problem with the EDL, respectively the tape names and am hoping anyone could point me to the solution;-)

When I load the EDL in Scratch, I want to match it with the timecode and the reel name (as the clipnames will be changed in Avid).

Though the EDL won't display the reel name the way Scratch does:
EDL Reel name = A001_C001_0224L9
Scratch Reel name = A001
and therefore the match reel wouldn't work.

To match it only with the timecode, it will result in several matches...which would be quite time consuming when conforming a 90 min film.

My workflow up to now has been:

1. Convert footage with red rushes to QuicktimeFiles in AvidDNXHD36
Settings: no extension(_H), reel name: full name (though I tried both full name and eight characters - won't make a difference)

2. Export ALE and import into Avid, batch import quicktime files

3. Export EDL (CMX3600/Red16) with different Settings (Reel ID: Cameraroll/Tape, with/without include source table, remove end....)

4. Import raw footage into scratch

5. load EDL

Has anyone an idea what I might have missed?
Thanks very much
Andrea

If the ALE to start was made with REDrushes, then the 4 character source reel ID is tracked in the Camroll or labroll column. Generate an EDL based on those sources. This is described in the Step by Step guide on www.avid.com/red

Hi Michael,
thank you for your reply.
I did read this guide, but for some reasons if I use Red16 and Labroll or Cameraroll the EDL will look like this:

001 A005_C005_022547 B C 20:11:38:13 20:14:12:10 01:00:00:00 01:02:33:22
002 A005_C005_022547 B C 20:11:38:13 20:14:12:10 01:02:33:22 01:05:07:19

if I use CMX3600 with either Cameraroll/labroll/tape...:

001 A005_C00 B C 20:11:38:13 20:14:12:10 01:00:00:00 01:02:33:22
002 A005_C00 B C 20:11:38:13 20:14:12:10 01:02:33:22 01:05:07:19

I haven't found the setting yet where to get only the four characters in the reel id..

In MediaComposer it will also show the whole name in the tape column, though it wouldn't make a difference if I would use in RedRushes under Reel ID: 'Full name' or 'FCP eight characters'

It feels like I have overseen a simple button...? Any ideas please?
thanks.
Andrea

it has been the button in the edl assembler in scratch (v4.4) 'match cross'
:)

Modify the CMX 3600 template in

/Applications/Avid/EDL Manager/SupportingFiles/EDL_Manager_Templates/

Open the file in a text editor and then change tape_name_len from 8 to 4

Save the template as "CMX_3600_Scratch" (or another name of your choice) in the same folder.

Open Avid EDL Manager and find the template in the pull down menu for Options>EDL Type

Another method I use:
1. In Avid Decompose your final sequence to create new master clips.
2. Copy the camera roll column info which contains the 16 char name to the clip name column. (I believe it's CTL+SHFT+D)
3. Now create your CMX-3600 edl for Scratch using 'include clipname' option.
4. In Scratch you can now use TC, reel name and clipname to get a solid match.
Works for me.
Best,
Andrew
