Its been covered here before.

The conclusion from many is that Avid really doesn't need to attend NAB any longer. I doubt it is a sign of anything other than they don't see any need to participate at the trade show floor level, they likely get much more business done in non public, parallel events.

ok...just wondering what people thought and was unable to find a post about it..maybe i did not use the right search terms..i still find it fascinating considering in the pre-fcp days they had the biggest booth on the floor.

Trade shows are going the way of the dinosaur. The companies who benefit most are small unknowns who need to get all of their customers into one place to easily reach them. The "Walk-by factor" also comes into play.

For a company like Avid you already have name recognition. They can make headlines anytime they want. They have sales representatives in every major market in the world. If you want to learn more about them you can drop by for personal attention. If they want to tell you about something new they're doing they can put out a press release.

A big booth is a waste of money that could be used to reach thousands of more customers through internet advertising and personal demoing.

Plus it's pretty hard to get a real idea of a product while standing at a booth with a hundred other people. Anyone who might be interested in Avid already knows it exists and is likely to do enough of their own research to have a fair idea what it does and does not do, and how... They're better served by a smaller more hands-on demo really, which is I think where Avid is going.

Also Avid has pretty strongly implied they're scaling back their marketing a touch while they concentrate on refocusing their approach for the market as it now exists. At least I hope that's what they're doing, because they've received a huge amount of very valuable feedback in the last couple of months, and they need to act on as much of it as they can.
