To all you avid and red experts out there.

I am about to start a RED project next month and am wondering the best way to set my project up and settings to use.

They are shooting 4k 16:9 25p and are transcoding to DNxHD36 25p. So I wondered what I set my AVID project to...ie. would it be 25p or 25i etc etc??

And the production have asked if it would be easier on storage if we worked in SD rather than HD...so how would I got about getting the material in SD and what would be a suitable resolution for this???

Any help would be brilliant!

Many thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,

set your Avid HD project to 1080p 25.
DNxHD36 only requires 50% more storage than DV25.... are sure this is really going to be a big problem? For example 1hour DNxHD36=19GB

Good luck with your project. Message me direct if your based in London and need quick and high quality RED data processing.

Cheers Jody. I think storage is gunna be a problem, we are shooting in Italy and editing on location there. So think it would need to be PAL rather than HD

PAL-HD

PAL-HD

Jody is right, the difference between PAL and HD in size is peanuts.

see here: http://www.broadcastautomation.com/dnxhd/widget/storage_calc_widget.html

Anyway the problem is mainly the transcoding times, SD takes about 2-3 times real time on beefed up macpro whereas SD is about 1-2 times real time.
If you have a RED-ROCKET this of course is alot quicker and makes no difference which method you use. Although you get alot of ailiasing in SD material because of the full-res output.

The most important thing with the AVID workflow is that you behold the metadata. I understand that MC 5.0 has R3D support might be worth checking out.

MC5 isn't out yet but SD is a real pain in the ass and as mentioned above the storage differences are not massive.
Get yourself a REDRocket and you'll save time and money that you can put towards the storage.

1080p 25 for your project settings.

they should encode directly to 1080p25 DNxHD36 MXF files from rocket and you have no import times. you can monitor with the mojo also in PAL, so there is no need to go on PAL edit...

i've done it to avid 10:1 then used lua to make dnx 185X

i've done it to avid 10:1 then used lua to make dnx 185X

Choice is good.....
so...
i've done a thing which will take a folder of r3d and make 10:1 sd mxf avid media and an ale that links it.
this will work on build 30 stuff cos it uses the new redline. A bit slower than the old redline but there you go.
this goes in directly to a 1080p project (in avid 4.02) and looks ok on a CRT PAL monitor.
the storage is HALF of DNxHD 36.

then when cut is done I do an xml using filmscribe
my thing makes a .lua file which you can run in redcine-x and grade/export to dnxhd 185x
put that stuff in the avid mediafiles structure and relink all works ok.

the download link for the lua bit is there and some instructions.
i'll put up the bit that encodes to 10:1 later tonight.
it's all free so if you test it and you're happy-way hey!
if it doesn't work for you-you've lost no cash!
it's techy to get going especially on windows where i am not great.... but if you're in the uk we can talk on the phone.
just pm me here.

love
j
