  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If the RED was (erroneously) set to 29.97 and a shoot took place where they rolled at 30FPS, how can this footage (MOS - no sound to worry about) be transcoded and delivered in DNxHD36 at 23.98 with accurate metadata for matchback?

Can it be processed to DNxHD36 at 29.97, or is that not possible?

Ooops. Well you'd have some serious issues there because 30p (which is what the camera shoots as it has no interlaced mode) would show as slow motion on a 24p timeline unless you throw away frames to get to 24 which would result in staccato motion artifacts. So really your only option is a 30p finish or get some plugins with high-end processing to see if you can 24p it with minimal artifacts.

Gotta be careful what you are shooting- it has indicators for frame rate on the back of the camera and on the viewfinder display. :)

Rebuild the cut by Hand with your R3D's in Adobe Premiere using Filmscribe Optical list. Build each cut the way you saw it carefully.

Then save your project.

Open After Effects.
File, Import Adobe project(All sequences).
Then double click on the sequence to open new composition.
Change Composition settings to 1920X1080 and scale all footage to fit 53%.

Then on EACH FILE- Interpret footage and change the frame rate to the speed you want it at.

Then add to render queue and render out to DNXHD for Avid.

Maybe there is an easier way, but this should work.

Use Twixtor, from re:vision

In AE, create a 24p composition. Set your footage to "interpret as" 24fps. drop that footy onto timeline, add Twixtor. Leave all as default, should work. If not, read manual and learn how to tweak, but 95% of the time re-timing goes well. If you are outputting to 1080p or 2K, downres FIRST, as otherwise Twixtor will take forever and a day.

If you are using Media Composer 4 (5 is coming out in June BTW), you should be able to open 29.97 in a 23.976 project using the new mix and match fuctionality. I believe the metadata will not be adversely affected, but IDK for sure.
