  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Avid Media composer 6 (final cut pro killer)

First person to develop FCP 7 --> Avid Media Composer 6 project and media workflow gets my undying gratitude. Any ideas on how to do this?

Of course, I haven't read the documentation to find out if Avid already has a workflow to do this...

Awesome Cuneyt, I'd love to see it work with MC 6. Sure am glad I waited on MC 5.5

Awsome!!! Best news here is that it I/O open, now this will open the flood gates for options. This is the reason that FCP gain ground in the first place.

Too bad I bought a MXO2 Mini last week. I have the larger version with SDI out, which I'm sure Matrox will be quick to write a driver for to compete against rivals.

Great news Avid!!!

I did the crossgrade at Nab time, so no free upgrade :-(
Does anyone know how much it cost to upgrade?

For the rest great news!

You can natively playback Epic within 6 with a Red Rocket. Huge time saver. Editing sequences now.

All I can say at the moment -stuff they have confirmed themselves.

Does the response feel snappy and precise (as if there is more than enough power) or does it feel as if you're just right on the edge of dropping frames and getting lag ?
Also, what's the playback resolution ? (half or quarter) and are you able to do multiple R3D video tracks?
thanks so much .

It's 200 for people that switched before Oct 15.
I think it's a great deal!

200 is almost free. In this community anyway.

I'm assembling my feature...we shot two Epics 5K 2:1, so there are 2 layers of video playing back...it's not full green (or green 10 bit) in the timeline -rather yellow/green- but you don't notice in the HD-SDI out on my reference monitor as far as any real resolution hit, even though there obviously would be.

But that's part of the beauty of acquiring in 5K -you have so much resolution to play with! And HDRx is MASSIVE...I can't tell you how different an image looks when you have something that's A track AMA'd within Avid versus an exported 175 DNxcel 10-bit from RCX Pro4...there is simply so much more information there...for example we had what looks like blown out clouds in a wide funeral shot with the sun rippling off the water. Using Magic Motion, a saturation tweak and a tiny boost on the red channel, and whammo! You have Dynamic range that rivals any 35mm I have seen transferred to HDSR and working at the same resolution and project settings. Everything is there, and the beauty is we have full control over the image (at least in RCX for now)...and that's another great thing -being able to use my MC Color with both RCX Pro and Symphony6.

The RT functionality is only going to improve before the official release.

Been testing MC6 for a while now with Decklink. NICE! Snappy, solid. Without RR plays back Red One yellow/green like native 1080. Not sure how you'd go with a big timeline - I would still transcode I think but it improves with each iteration of MC. RGB plays nice. Avid without restrictions. That's what we've been waiting for!

Now, I wonder what Editshare have up their sleeves? Can't wait for the day when you have you Decklink or Kona card installed, MC, Lightworks, FCP and PP in the dock and you simply choose your weapon of choice. 2012 Look out!

I may be wrong, but I believe the Red Rocket is still only for transcode acceleration.

If that's the case then there is something within AMA architecture that is allowing Red Epic 5K footage to playback...clearly it would make huge sense to make this hardware supported in Symphony if it isn't already. But I know what i'm looking at, and it's 5K footage scaled down to 1080/23.98!

It should also be pointed out that the workflow should be RCXPro to Avid rather than Avid and then transcode...doesn't make sense, especially if you have the amazing tools with RCX Pro5, and I would think we would want to be able to do a first light pass with HDRx footage and to take advantage of Alchemy.

The 64 bit architecture and additional optimization allow for smoother playback when working at less than full debayer. AMA always uses the next highest debayer to the project resoluton when playing. So a 1080 project is using 2K debayer. Only when transcoding do you get to choose the FULL debayer in the media creation settings and if there is a card, it will be accelerated. I have notices on a 12 core OSX that transcoding directly via AMA from a half debayer good was near real time which is great for DNxHD 36 dailies.

Have been exchanging with Avid Beta and they confirm what Michael is saying about how the Red Rocket is only used in transcoding. The AMA playback of Red Epic files is based on the 64 bit architecture. I tested it by removing the RR and there was no change in performance.

So you don't need a Rocket for Symphony or MC6 unless you're transcoding within Avid, but I would not recommend this as a workflow...definitely do your one light pass in RC-X Pro6 first and then export from there. Then move to the Avid Media Files/MXF/1 folder and place there...within Symphony open Media Tool and drag your transcodes to a bin...I have found this to be the best way to work until the RCXPro Tools can be integrated directly from within Avid. Here's hoping!
