This is a question for the folks that visited the Avid booth and the Adobe booth at NAB.

Which new NLE version handled native RED footage better? Avid MC5 or Adobe CS5?

Premiere has no stereoscopic tools however you can use Cineform's NEO 3D with it. There are various scripts that work for s3D in After Effects but nothing native I am aware of. Avid MC already has a stereoscopic offline with a variety of 3D monitoring options but there are limitations. There are two methods I use depending on turn around time and whether the material is file based (animations), file based (from a camera) or tape based material:

1) Process L/R side by side s3D material in Metafuze and edit in Avid MC
2) Or Work with each clip independently in Avid MC

The advantage of MCv5 is that you can skip Metafuze processing completely and link to the R3Ds through the new AMA features. I understand there is also Red Rocket support as well. But here you are stuck with workflow 2. Would be great if Avid would implement some stereo tracks to link them for editing and global effects and then step in to individual tracks to manipulate independently... like in the new Smoke release....

Alternatively as AMA has been developed to include linking to quicktime it means you could, in theory, link to NEO 3D Film Light files in the same way you can do with Premiere... this would be very interesting indeed! Here you would need to process all the R3Ds first to QT Cineform files....THEN Mux them together again in Cineform First Light to create a QT Cineform stereo file.... this is not obviously not RT and would add delays to the pipeline... the advantage with NEO 3D is once the files are processed they can be manipulated where as in Avid MC you can only monitor in s3D....

Looking forward to testing this in the next month....

Given the same computer and RAID array, which handles RED files better, MC5 or CS5 (Premiere)?

No clue yet since both aren't out yet... I say the major advantage of AVID is their rock solid media management, and what they are known best for. Advantage of PREMIERE is the mercury playback and GPU acceleration. In high end post environments, I believe AVID is the better choice if you get in a lot of material day in and day out. PP I think is a better choice if personal performance is what you want most out of it.

All speculative of course, MC 5 could cut R3D like butter for all I know, we have to see.

I have worked with P5. Just completed a short form 3D job. Having the native R3D ingest was awesome and being able to scale both L eye and R eye on Channels 1 and 2 without having to render was great. BTW - we were using the Hyundai monitor and being able to play R3D's simultaneously on both V1 and V2 scaled and flipped transforms allowed us to edit and view in 3D natively in Premiere without having to do any rendering. When we had our locked EDL we sent it out to Scratch to finish.
That said, I am very much looking forward to what Media Composer 5 brings.

Wow that sounds very complex, do you have a screen shot?

I use both of these programs (MC4 and CS4 - am upgrading when the new ones release) depending upon what I am doing. I find they both have strengths and weaknesses and having them both gives me greater flexibility.

Haven't done any 3D work yet but I bet that having both will continue to give me the best of both worlds.

I don't have any screenshots of editorial and Color Grading just the Element Technica rig which we used with two RED One's. Nice workflow though and it was quite seamless throughout the process.

You said it was short form work, how long did the final render take? Do you own a RED Rocket™? oops i see you sent your EDL out to scratch for final render

For R3D, Adobe is far ahead of the game. MC5 will play back internally only 1080p, 1/4 res real time. But it does work with the Red Rocket Card. PPro Cs5 well just Google it.
