  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

avid.com/red/

You stole my announcement thunder! ;)

Anyway, yes. www.avid.com went live today (even thought they told me tomorrow) but has an aggregation of lots of feedback, tools, etc. As with all things, workflows will continue to be streamlined and improved over time.

Enjoy!

Quote from Step by Step Red Guide on www.avid.com/red

This guide details the steps required to move RED R3D files -
the native recording format of the RED ONE camera - through
an HD post production process using Avid® Media Composer® v3.0.5
or later or Avid Symphony™ v 3.0.5 or later editing systems.

The problem is I don't see 3.0.5 on my downloads page so no new codec yet.
Michael maybe that's what we'll see tomorrow.

patiently waiting

Nice to see Monkey Extract getting a shout out :)

The steps for rendering a timeline as DPX are as follows:

- In Avid, select the timeline you wish to export. On the menu bar click Output > EDL to launch EDL manager.
- Next to Active Setting, click Edit to launch the options window.
- Set EDL Type to CMX_3600.
- On the Options tab, untick all the items. Make sure that Convert tapenames to numbers is of.
- Set tapename truncation to Remove End
- In the main window, click ---> to create the EDL. Save it.
- In Monkey Extract, select the Red source, EDL and a destination.
- In the settings pages, set the output format to DPX, folders to one folder per reel, resolution to whatever you're finishing with
- Hit Ok, and then Extract.
- When you're done, a new EDL will have been created which fixes the tapename truncation.

This is the DPX workflow for finishing in Nitris, Color, Baselight, Smoke etc.

A DNxHD workflow for finishing in Avid will follow shortly.

Any comments or feature requests, let me know! Thanks.

Timing everything has been challenging... v.3.0.5 has changes we have made to the DNxHD QT codec as well as the the XML workflows. V.3.0.5 should be out by next week.

The REDrushes import into Avid should work now with the release of the new RED QT component with an EDL to Monkey Extract.

Michael, love the new page. This is the type of thing that will get people on board even quicker. Nicely laid out and thorough.

So does this mean the FilmScribe -> Redcine "pull list" doesn't work until v3.0.5?

Correct - there had to be changes to the bin structure and tracking in Media Composer that FilmScribe uses to extract the metadata - then the XML template has to be revamped for all standard and custom metadata.

Keep in mind that the REDcine XML assumes that the orginal ALE was done via RedCine to ALE.

I knew it!

I knew it!

I knew something like this would happen if I waited long enough. Thanks for getting this up. It's nice to see something directly on Avid's website about this. Now, I think I can wait for MC to support red natively without panic.

I need help. I'm doing my offline in SD. I follow the tutorial(REDstepbystep), but when I try to import the archive .ALE (done in REDRushes), my project isn't accepted, and I receive the message: You're not in an 1080 project.

So, I use the MetaCHEATER and made my .ALE, right? in this case, i need to do the "Modify: Tracks Audio" and "Increment Timecode End (+00:00:00:01)?

Is this the correct process?

*.R3d => REDRushes (export QT) => MetaCheater (Build .ALE file) => drag and drop . ALE in AVID +> Modify: Audio Tracks and Increment Timecode (+00:00:00:01) => Batch Import => Edit.

thanks,

Danilo Lemos

As rebusfilm says, MetaCheater is the way to go since it is the only one to support the SD conversion process from the 24 frame metadata. Open QT refs or QT mov files in M<etaCheater, go to the settings and set it to NTSC 23.976 (or 24 dependng on what you shot at) and make sure that on the front pane of the application to select the 24 -> 30 conversion. The app defaults to properly logging the +1 to the END already so no father modification is needed. The only change you would need to make is adding the "Audio" tracks in Media Composer.

I'm getting "unable to find key number" in filmscribe when I try to make an XML in sync with what is told on the Avid red workflow site. I have only updated filmscribe at the moment (in fear that something gets wrong if I update Avid itself).
Is it needed to update Avid to be able to create a working XML in filmscribe?

Don't worry about the KeyKode message, it is still looking at some of the original film based code. The 3.0.6 update removes those messages. Just "OK" your way through them.
