Avid basic workflow

sorry for the elementary question, but due to the mess of info i cannot find the answer here...

what is the basic workflow (no need for TC issues now) in Avid both for SD and 4K finished products?

i want to build an Avid editing suite that will be capable of working RED.
any unique info spec?

Well, if you're not worried about matching back TC then it's very simple:

Shoot -> Export as <you're favourite codec here> QuickTime files from RedCine with basic corrections -> Import into Avid -> Edit -> CC in Avid -> Lay-off to tape (or export to QT/AVI file for data-centric delivery).

You could always export and re-import the footage at the CC stage if you wanted to do your CC in another app, of course.

The only issue comes when you want to edit lower-quality footage than you're conforming to, which puts you into TC-challenge territory, although it's looking like that's getting fixed by the friendly folks at RedUser as we speak...

my idea is to conform on a system that can read OMF and knows how to handle quicktime ref. i'll (theoretically) bring the original R3D to the system with their quicktime links and then the system will see omf with cutted quicktime inside that will point out to the R3D...

can it work?

Once there is a QT ref for Windows I can see that possibly working on the Flame. Scratch will take an EDL and go back to the original 3D file, no need for QT ref.

in HD you cannot work with omf anymore, you must use mxf.

at the moment you cannot use qt refs because the use not a correct colormatrix. you have to render qt movies and apply 709 colormatrix to reproduce the real colors.

2K and 4K finishing is done in Avid DS. The workflow would be to use the metadata from the Avid Media Composer back to RedCine and export DPX files. There will be tools to take RedCine XML (in and out) to help faciliate the process coming online in the near future.

I've tested DPX conform in Avid DS. The problem at the moment is that RedCine messes up DPX headers on occasion. This results in missing frames or missing shots if the first frame of a timeline clip has mangled header.

Other than that DS conform works well. Hopefully RedCine operation will improve soon.

Remember DS is not a DI color grading tool!

It can do a lot, but is not able to do a secondary color correction in real time!

I've worked on DS and love to work on DS but had to confront desapointed clients who had to wait for render the "selective color correction" keyer to be able to see anything. And key in 2k or even in 4k is long very long waiting time.

Hope AVID will improve their best product (IMHO)!
