Just got my Scarlet today and after shooting some test footage and putting it in Redcine, it just won't link to AVID 5.0.

Here's my procedure.

- I put the r3d file in redcine and export it as a 1080 24p DNxHD 175 10bit file. exporting it out to a new folder on my desktop.
- I then open up a new AVID project that's 1080 24p and try to link up the converted file.
- I tried linking ama and importing with the aaf file, the mxf file, and the original r3d file. There's always an error or if something does import, it usually says the media is offline.

What am i doing wrong??

Hi Michael,

Unless I am mistaken, AMA cannot link to DNxHD files. If you want to use AMA, you have to download the proper plugin from Avid's website and link to the R3D files them selves.

If you converted them to DNxHD, then put all those files in the Avid MediaFiles folder and use the Media Tool inside Avid to bring them into your project.

Additionally, you can also opt to do a fast import of those new DNxHD files by navigating to the file menu and choosing "Import" just like you normally would.

Hope this helped.

What Omar said is partially correct. Avid can link to DNxHD encoded Quicktimes, but if you are talking MXF's they won't link. To use AMA, you want to select "Link to AMA Volume", then chose the directory that has the parent folder for all the .r3d's. They should pop right in.

Remember, starting with Avid MC 5.x, the AMA plugins are not installed by default. The link for the installers is here: http://www.avid.com/US/products/Avid-Media-Access/Plug-ins

Keep in mind that you cannot work natively in AMA; usually the .r3d's are too massive that you cannot play them back unless you have a really intense system. However, after they've been linked, you can transcode them to DNxHD.

thanks, that helps a lot. Realized that Avid 5.0 can't support the plugin or red ama, so I'm upgrading to 6.0. A necessary upgrade. Appreciate the help gentlemen.
