  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have been searching for Vegas support (which seems to be pretty much non-existent). I edit in FCP, but if somebody wanted to work in Vegas, is there a way to output from Redcine or Red Alert to a file Vegas can use? I have been trying to export prores from Red Cine, then export an .avi file from FCP, but not only is file size ridiculously large, but I can't get more than a 5 second clip to export at full res, uncompressed.

I love Vegas. If I could go back to it it would be a dream for me. If somebody has found a Vegas workflow, I am all ears. Thanks for this post Jim!

i use Vegas ..

i shoot 4K 2:1 aspect
depending on the day or project ... i may use FCP and drop in the 2k proxy and render out to 2k cineform ... or i may use Redcine ( on PC) and render out 2k cineform .. (90% of the time i use proxy's so the FCP output is a 2k QT cineform clip not a AVI)
also if i think the shots needs med to major CC i'll take the R3D clip into Red Alert - CC and then create NEW proxy ...
i have to say the FCP 2k proxy looks really good and render time is much faster then rendering in Redcine ( pc or mac) ...

i then take the 2k cineform QT clips into Vegas ...i use the HD 1920x1080 pre set and modify it to 2048X1024 ...
when edit is locked
1) i then turn on the 32bit float to CC
2) i then go into pan/crop and use the 16x9 preset ( makes the frame 1820x1024) - then manually change it to 1920x1080 = it will crop off a little on both sides of the 2048 frame ( instead of scaling to 1920) ... so final out will be a 1920X1024 image inside the HD 1920X1080 frame = small black bars at top/bottom of frame ..
render using 1920x1080 HD presets ..
NOTE: on render be sure to uncheck the box that says fill image to frame = do not letterbox ...

VEgas workflow:

- render everything into draft QT photojpeg at 1K
- edit in vegas
- export aaf
- manually export ONLY the shots that you used on your edit in redcine at your desired resolution
- open aaf in AE. conform with a simple "file change"
- all cuts and fades work perfectly, no mistmatchs
