Hey all,
I'm applying for a film and video grant. And I'm writing my budget proposal. I shoot, act, edit and composite everything myself (with the help of a few masks.) Except for the final scene which is going to take place in front of a castle with a Red camera crew. It'll be a 1 day shoot. Was wondering how much that usually costs for crew and equipment and location? And it would probably be in europe, since I don't know of too many american castles, hearst's doesn't count. I know this is a pretty generic question so if I need to give more detail let me know. Thanks in advance, jayson

$2,313.76 US dollars
I just thought id threw a number out for you.

I'd say somewhere between BigLu's figure and lots lots more.

Speaking of lots, lots more: Yep, you need to give more detail. Lots of.

Where in Europe? (Last time I checked, it was pretty big there.)

What sort of equipment - just run'n gun, with a 2 man crew or aerial shots with explosions and 7576 extras? Inexperienced crew or the best that money can buy?

Best advice I can offer:
Call you local camera rental house tell them what you want to shoot. They'll quote you from there.

location fees are a different story all together. You need to know where when how much access. insurance. I suggest you map out the where when and how first then ask again.

Here's a rough breakdown for standard professional rates for a 1 day shoot for a top notch crew (it gets cheaper if you pay by the week). Local rates may vary.

Insurance: 500,-

Location Fee Castle: 5000,-

D.P.: 2000,-
1st A.C.: 550,-
Data Wrangler: 500,-
Camera Rentals: 2000,-

Local Line Producer: 500/day for 3 days prep, 1 day shoot, 1 day wrap
Production Coordinator: 350/day for 2 days prep, 1 day shoot
1st A.D.: 800,-
3 P.A.'s: 175,- each
Walkies: 300,-

Gaffer: 550,-
Best Boy Electric: 525,-
Electric: 500 each (1-3)
Lighting Truck: 2000,-
Generator: 300,-

Key Grip: 550,- (if you're shooting in Europe it will be your camera/dolly grip, in the U.S. it will be the head of its own department with wider responsibilities)
Best Boy Grip: 525,-
Grip: 500 each (1-3)
Grip Truck: 400,-

Sound Man: 500,-
Boom Operator: 350,-
Sound Equipment: 300,-

Wardrobe Stylist/Designer: 800,-
Wardrobe Rentals: 1000,-

Make-up/Hair: 500,-

Art Director: 900,-
Art Crew: 350,- each
Materials: 1200,-

Prop Master: 600,-
Prop rentals: 400,-

Catering/Craft services: 25,-/head

Transportation: check with your local Line Producer
-Mobile Home: 200,-
-Gas: 300,-

Prep day for all Key positions.

All this can be done much more involved or simply of course depending on your needs:

Owner Operator who is desperate:
-2000,- including camera, lenses and all accessories and his work, including prep
-His brother as assistant/download tech: 400,-
-His uncle doing boom &sound & Equipment: 450,- (He is grumpy)
-Grip with some shiny boards/C-Stands/Lights in his Pickup: 500,-
-Sandwich for everybody at lunch and water/snacks on set: 120,-

Location: you make friends with the owner of the castle and don't pay anything. Therefore you won't need insurance and you make the desperate owner/operator include it in the deal since you ride a hard bargain...

Good luck, it sounds like you're in for a good learning experience...

One Meeeelllion Dollars...

I could probably shoot it for less, but could definitely shoot it for more.

Florian!

Great break down, I wanna work on your shoots.
Any day,
that was such a complete list.

few more dollars that my guesstimating.
I was a little on the low budget thought.

nice work

very funny

typical prices in berlin:

cam dep:
red one /hdcam / arri 35 camera with basic gear: 300-450.
zeiss / cooke prime lenses: 15-75 each.
angenieux / cooke zoom : 100-300 each.

DOP: 200-1000. 200´ DOP are often highly motivated 1st ACs.
There are many hungry 1st ACs who understand RED better than whitemane DOPs - we have a list of them here, feel free to PM if you want to get some phone numbers.

red and hdcam are pretty booked out here in berlin, 35mm mechanical cams however are easy to get.

grip/light: 150-450 each. Inexpensive grip/light often is beginner level.

5KW: ~ 10€
2KW: ~ 8€
tungsten, HMI triple-quad.

castles can be zero, if you are clever and can offer some of the footage. chambord in france is certainly one of the most spectacular ones. The whole loire area in france is pretty recommendable - lots of ruins and lots of perfectly maintained castles.#

for a castle, you will need *lots* of lights - probably you want to go with dinos etc, these usually run 50-75 a day.

the summer is the main shooting time - so try to avoid that time if you are cost sensitive as most good people are flooded with jobs.

woodybrando, I think you're at the concept stage of your proposal, and maybe you could wring in that last scene to blend in with the rest of your film; maybe even do it on greenscreen, which is very acceptable nowadays and far more accessable, with your granted budget. You don't have to go to Europe to be there; ask any Hollywood woodcock....

The prices are almost right, according to your budget. If you can afford to rent a castle, go for it. If you can't, and it's needed, try to fake it!
