  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Avatar on Blu Ray

promotional still vs bluray :) <snip>

It's quite likely that the still was generated with motion blur turned off for the foreground character; the bluray still looks like Sully is moving which may explain the blur.

Also no grain or blooming in the promo.

Personally I think the BluRay looks better. But that might just be because my eye jumps to all the problems with the render in the promo. MoBlur is often a godsent.

Background on both pictures is identical, only character in promo is rendered in very hi resolution with hires textures without any motion blur. ... Just for nice promo still.

The level of detail in this shot is astonishing. Outstanding work by Weta Digital.

I actually think that shot was done by Blur Studios.

The promotional shot looks like an Olan Mills family portrait with a pull down background :)

It's sad when you have to pull the render quality down SO MUCH to match the camera. I really hope they consider the EPIC on the next production as well.

Of course, I will also say that softening the render does help it look a little more realistic as well in this case. But whoever did the composite on that still from the bluray did a great job.

Oh, wow! I thought Weta was doing everything.

Weta did anything with a creature.

ILM did the air battles and interiors.

Prime Focus I believe handled the holographic displays.

Framestore did the landing pad and the hanger bay.

Blur did all of the space shots.

Maybe Jim should sit down and have a chat with Jim? I bet a 3-minute reel showing Epic footage cutting against CGI 1080p footage like "Wall-E" vs F950 footage cutting against "Wall-E" would seal the deal.

I also bet Peter Jackson could make this meeting happen.
