Been out in the studio the last few days shooting food with the Scarlet. Lot's of close in product shots of slices of cake being served / eggs being whipped, etc.

Pretty tedious work, food is very fussy and it takes forever to set-up & light a shot, then you take away the 'stunt' plate and wait for the hero plate - could take an hour +++ to get a shot. All the while the cam is powered so client, agency, and stylists can be watching progress on the monitor and critique the placement of everything...

Here's the problem - The camera seems to have some sort of 'auto-shutdown' and will just turn itself off. I'm using Vmounts and the first time I thought that the battery had gone flat, but it still had 80-90% charge (subsequent shutdowns have been with similarly charged batteries, from multiple manufacturers). I don't want to go with house power, because we're on a jib and I don't want yet another cable to get in the way and screw with balance. (I will try today with house power as a control exp)

It doesn't seem to be overheating either - the temps are within range, and the fan is set to auto.

Is 'auto-shutdown' a feature? If so can it be turned off? I've scoured the manual and the menus, but I can't come up with the answer...

P.S. As a side note, the battery level gauge doesn't seem to change colour (green for lot's of charge, yellow for depleted charge, red for 'change the battery idiot') as the manual states it should. Just a firmware hiccup?

What type of battery?

Which battery plate?

What cable is connecting the plate to the camera?

For starters.

I am not aware of any autoshutdown features but V-locks and plates (depending on the one you get) can be "not so good" compared to others which are excellent.

Still waiting on my SH, so I ordered a XLR to RED cable. Plugged in my 12v 90w battery belt ( 7 years old) got about 5 mins run time and it auto shut down around 9v. I was shooting and I am happy to say that there were no issue with the clip when it shut down.

As soon as I can find a gold mount to xlr I should be back in biz.

Yeah that's a low voltage shutdown - not the same as I'm experiencing. I still have 'full' voltage available to the camera; or at least voltage well above what the cam needs to operate. Especially when it's plugged into the wall...

This is no "Auto Shutdown" feature other than the built in camera protection features (over temp, over/under voltage, etc). When you reboot the camera does it say it was improperly shutdown? You may want to send a log file to RED support to make sure there are no other issues with your camera or setup.

No it does not say that it was improperly shutdown:
-Voltage from the battery never drops below 14v, voltage from the AC Power adapter is rock steady at 15v. The camera shuts down when voltage drops below 11.5v.
-Temp is pretty steady at 41ºC with idle fan speed showing 70% (fan is set to auto) so we're not in any overtemp situation.

I asked this because other cameras that I've owned / used in the past had an auto shutdown power management feature that shut the camera off if it had been idle for a set period of time.

I will send a log file, but I wanted to 'ask around' to see if there was something I missed...
