I am a Photographer/Cinematographer and was waiting for something like the DSMC Scarlet to be envisioned and realized. My quick question is, how good will the Auto-Foucs be in still's mode. Will it be equivalent to say a D3 or 1D, where the AF is quick and able to track fast moving subjects say for wedding photography or a kids soccer game, Or will it be average like say that of a 5dmkii. I feel that it is essential to have good AF in still's mode to be used professionally for still photography.

Manual Focus is the only way for cinematography for films and commercial work But sometimes you may need Auto-Focus in video mode. Say for documentary work or wedding video work that you may land for a bit of extra cash on the side. So will there be some form of AF in video mode ? or will i have to also invest in a documentary type camera such as an EX1 ? Maybe im asking for too much, but if all these points a covered than we may have the ultimate ALL in One tool..

It's unclear whether there will be AF in video mode, but I wouldn't expect AF in stills mode to be as fast or as a pro DSLR. The AF mechanism in a DSLR doesn't use the sensor, but it enabled by the use of a mirror which the Scarlet doesn't have. I imagine the speed of the AF will be closer to a DSLR in Live View mode, which uses sensor-based contrast auto-focus.

Of course, I wouldn't put it past RED to have completely obviated the need for mirror-based autofocus considering the preponderance of dumbfounding breakthroughs they've already achieved.

EDIT: Also, AF will depend on whether you are using a "Smart," like the current Birger mount, or "Dumb," like the current RED Nikon mount, and whether the lens itself has an autofocus motor. A cine lens is never going to give you AF because it doesn't have a motor.

Guys im reviving this thread as i need to plan for this year and what equipment to buy. As you know i do both photography and cinematography, I basically need good AF for Stills mode (manual focus for video is fine). So will the Scarlet S35 do this in stills? Will there also be touch auto tracking in video mode that i was reading about ?

Finally will the canon/nikon lenses have full AF/Aperture control with the scarlet s35 if we use the red adapter rings?

Thanks so much guys...

Ben,
You got a couple of questions.....how fast are the new Reds for still and for video use. I guess the same system will be used for still & video mode so there would be a relationship between the two.
But of course no one knows yet how it'll work and how quick, except Red.
Their usual mantra has been if something about it is better than the competition they tell the world, if not you find out when you get it.
Either way you're asking how fast is that initial focus delay and that's a Red question...!!

Another interesting thing will be how you select/track subject focus on DSMC's in video mode. What goodies will they include and how useful will they be?
Auto & manual object focus select, racking between objects, tracking objects, setting up focus pulls using touch screens.
Be interesting to see how the manual focus assist will work.
Maybe something similar to false colour assist, except banded regions depict 6k, 4k, HD, SD, filthy, levels of focus etc.

RED should really bring in AF video with face recognition if they want to stay leaders of the pack.
If they don't someone else will because IMO this is the way it is all heading.

edit: i use the term face recognition loosely - it could be any form of motion tracker

Of course you will have access to Nikon lenses and Canon lenses which, both of which have AF mechanisms that that can be controlled by the Epic/Scarlet. I've read through a bunch of posts and I remember RED being pretty proud of their autofocus with their lenses.

I'd expect still and motion AF modes, I believe they have confirmed as much in the other posts.

Thanks for clarifing that Ralph, So do you think AF will be alot better using RED lenses vs say Canon glass? Im guessing the AF module/chip will be within the sensor/brain module, So do you think the AF chip will be the same all across scarlet/epic brains ?

Also can anyone estimate how good the AF will be ? Jim? :blush5:
