I have a problem with sound.

We recorded separate 24-bit 48Khz sound saved as standard WAV files in addition to a temp soundtrack recorded directly to the Red One camera.

When reviewing in Storm, the audio sounds too slow, and when the clips are dragged onto the timeline, the audio track is about 25% longer than the video track. The audio is correctly identified by Storm as Stereo, 24bit, 48 Khz in the In Tray, and plays fine in the finder using Quicktime and Red Cine-X, and proxies generated by Red Cine-X exhibit no sound issues at all. The separate WAV also plays too slow, too.

Mac: iMac 2.66GHz Core i5 / 4GB RAM
Storm: Storm1.0v1b1

Let me know if you need any other info!

I'd check the audio sample-rate settings in your project....make sure they match the rate of the wav files.

If your project is set to 44.1khz, for example, and the sample rate of the media is 48khz, it will play back "slowed down".

I've also seen this same issue when recording in Metacorder with a different sample rate than what my AD converter was putting out. Lets say your mic preamp is spitting out a 44.1khz AES signal but your recording gear is recording at 48khz.....this would cause the problem you are seeing as well.

That was my initial thought, but I could find nowhere in Storm, where I could set what the audio settings were. I've seen similar things in After Effects where the audio was 44.1Khz and the project was 48Khz, and vice versa. If there is a setting in Storm and I'm being an idiot, could someone point me in the right direction...!

Cheers

And I think the latter issue you mention may not apply, because everything else plays the audio and audio/video back perfectly fine; it's only Storm that is slowing the audio down, as if the project there is set to 44.1Khz. But like I said, I can't see how to change that setting in Storm...

Hi Jason, I tried here with our 24bit 48khz test files and it seems okay. Would it be possible for you to send us the files? If yes, can you email:

beta-storm@thefoundry.co.uk

...and we will set up an ftp account for the file transfer.

many thanks,
Dan

I installed the new beta to see if this fixes my audio issues; but sadly not. The audio is still slow, gradually moving out of sync, so that the clapper audio happens almost a second after the visuals... *sigh*

The audio sounds fine using the R3D codec in Quicktime and in the latest build of RedCine-X. I can create a proxy file of the R3D and sync the externally recorded sound up fine in FCP (externally recorded WAVs sound slow, as well as the ones recorded concurrently to the camera)

Dan, I know you guys were probably busy with the release of the new beta, but I emailed beta-storm@thefoundry.co.uk and have heard nothing. Would you like me to upload an R3D file to our FTP...?

Cheers

Okay... a little update which may shed some light on this curious problem...

When I drag an R3D clip into the viewer to review it and I click play once, the sound is slow. You can click the play button multiple times to see a speeded up version of the clip. If I click the play button to get 2x, 4x and 8x playback THEN click the back button to the beginning of the clip and play normal speed again, the sound which was slow is now playing at the right speed and synced correctly to the visuals!

A bit of mindbender, but I guess this is why they call it beta software...!

Further update, this convoluted process also works with our externally recorded WAV files...

1) Drag into Review viewer > play too slow
2) Play at 2x, 4x and 8x speed THEN click the back button
3) Now plays fine...

O.o

Hi Jason, you should have received two emails, one from the 8th and another follow up today both with the ftp details. Let me know if they didn't come through.

thanks,
Dan

Hi all, we have managed to get some files to reproduce this issue and it has now been logged as: 15893

many thanks,

Hi Dan

Didn't get a chance to upload the files today (if you still need them) as I was busy installing the latest Mac OS, FCP and CS5 on all our machines that haven't been upgraded yet. Will do tomorrow (Friday).

As a little test, I loaded the latest Storm beta on a brand new Mac Pro and tested our footage: the audio was in Sync. So, perhaps it is machine specific.

Will post more details tomorrow when I get a chance, but thought you'd want to know.

Keep up the good work, guys! Love storm, and will love it even more when the kinks are ironed out!

Jason

I am also getting odd audio. However it is not a sample rate issue. If I load a clip or folder into Storm and play the clip, the audio has a sort of stutter effect. as if you were hitting a mute button every other frame. Then after 5 seconds of playback the audio cuts out. If I load the proxy in QT if plays back fine with no audio issues. This has happened on all clips I have brought in.

Hi all, can you try the latest 1.0v1b4 build? We have made a fix for the files that were sent to us, but it would good to know if this resolves all cases.

many thanks,
Dan
