Audio Timecode (and Merge Clips) in 5.5?

Just downloaded the CS5.5 demo and while the new R3D support is AMAZING, I have a question about reading timecode from audio files and clip merging....

I'm under the assumption that PPro now reads timecode from audio files. I opened up a few files recorded on a Sound Devices recorder and PPro displays the timecode starting at 0:00:00:00 for all files - just like CS5. These files auto-sync in RedCine-X perfectly, but PPro doesn't seem to be reading the audio files' timecode properly - so when I do a 'merge clips' from the Project window, it doesn't sync correctly.

Is there a preference that needs to be changed? How is this supposed to work? And is it possible to batch merge clips like in RCX? I would be a real pain to have to hand pick the files take by take...

And slightly off topic - none of the RED Presets (or DSLR or AVCHD, etc...) show up in the 'new sequence' dialog box.

Audio TC bug confirmed. When I dropped audio files into a bin they initially displayed 00:00:00:00 but after dropping a few more in the first files would display the correct TC but that later files wouldn't. After restarting PPCS5.5 all the audio clips in the bin display 00:00:00:00

Working on Win7/64 version.

I don't have the missing sequence options that Kenn reports.

What type of audio files are you using? Can you send one to me?

Thanks

Dave

Just normal WAV files coming from a Sound Devices 702T. Same audio files open in FCP with proper TC displayed. Will record one for you and PM.

Just keeping everyone in the loop. I am getting timecode from Kenn's files... I am digging deeper.

Update - uninstalled 5.5 and re-installed. Audio TC is being read from the files correctly now. Dave, thanks for your quick response to my issue!

Initially - un-installing CS5.5 and re-installing.

HOWEVER... Paul, now I'm getting the same issue you got. The file I sent to Dave is read properly, but other files that were recorded by the 702T and then processed in a 3rd party editor show up as starting at 0:00:00:00, but then opening a project that had them loaded into the project reads the timecode correctly. Loading them into a new project produces the incorrect behavior. Confusing.

And lastly - I've been getting a few of these messages:

This project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type.

This is opening a project I just created that didn't actually have any sequences in it. It won't let me open the project. I also got this error when importing an XML from FCP. The same XML opens properly in CS5.

Question - I remember when installing CS5, both PPro and AE have to install additional codecs, etc when you ran the app for the first time. With the 5.5 trial, this happened in AE, but not in PPro. Is that expected behavior?

There are no additional codecs in 5.5 trial, they are all included. We are very excited about that. AE is installing some other bits that aren't related to formats. DO you have an xml that doesn't work that you can send me?

Thanks

Can I get one of these new files?? Something is fishy and I want to know what ;)

So now I'm experiencing exactly what Paul is:

I import file 1. The TC reads 0:00:00:00.
I import file 2. It's TC reads 0:00:00:00.
BUT, sometimes after file 2 is imported, file 1's audio TC is now read properly.
I import file 3. It's TC may or may not be read properly.
File 2 still reads 0:00:00:00.

Basically, sometimes I can get PPro to read the audio TC by just continuing to import additional files. It's very random.

Back from a trip to the office... Just downloaded more samples, we are really interested in getting to the bottom of this....

FYI, PP reads and syncs very well SD generated sound files (WAVs with TC) and video files via TC since CS 5.0.2. We do that every day.

The new reference clip feature may have one big disadvantage regarding referencing the sound file in the XML for later conforming. FCP's reference clips are NOT pictured correctly in the XML, at least the sound file isn't. Premier Pro's old school way by dropping both files in the TL and then right click on them, select Synching and TC is very convenient an works in a later conform as expected.

Are you using WAV files? Has TC been set to TOD in the Sounddevice 744T and then slaving the REDOne?

Are you using the same TC-base on the project in PP and the sound files/R3Ds?

I'm asking because we are running PP on Mac and PC and we never had the issue you are describing. Interesting.

Yep, all those things. PPro CS5 reads these files just fine. CS5.5 does not. Every other program reads the TC from these files without issue.
