Still figuring out FCPX...

Syncing audio based on timecode generates a new clip. That seems like an unnecessary step. What is your workflow for syncing external audio in a proxy workflow?

Not sure what you’d expect. It leaves the audio clip and the original video clip intact and available. And, pretty sure it doesn’t generate an actual new clip on the hard drive; just points to the existing media. And the synced clip “sticks” whether you are working with proxy or original media.

I expected that it would link the external audio to the r3d files. I believe it's creating a new clip as optimized media (Prores 422) with the synced audio. My concern is that if I try to make proxy files for editing I will be making proxy files from the transcoded synced media and not the original r3d files. That creates unnecessarily large Libraries, if media managed, and I'm concerned about swapping the viewer back to original media only allowing access to the transcoded sync clip rather than the original r3d. I believe Resolve/RedcineX will both sync audio without transcoding footage; however, there's no way exporting that synced media without transcoding.

So, it sounds as though the dialogue box for sync audio is for renders only, and it's not actually transcoding the original media. Is your typical workflow to import media, sync audio, adjust RAW settings, then create proxies?
