Hi guys,

Not sure if this has been covered but if I want to add a RODE MIC PRO on a Raven, would I need to get something like the I/O Module just to put in the jack plug?
Or are there cheaper solutions that I haven't discovered yet, as far as I'm concerned there are no jack/aux ports on the brain itself?

Cheers,
Davy

yeah, there is not, not even a power port, you need an i/o for everything except the new touch monitor or the new evf.

Hmm, that's gonna be around €1700 just to add a mic using AUX/Jack.
I wonder why they added a DC Power Adapter to the basic package if you can't plug it in :O

You'll need at minimum, the base expander. The good new is, the rode mic will work without issue unlike the epic.

Good to know! The little 'cut the white cable' trick from Peter did the trick getting it to work on a Scarlet.

Hey just out of curiosity...not that I've done the research, but does the Raven have built-in mics? The area where the mics are placed in Weapon look vastly different from Raven (mostly due to the ripple chip look) so just curious if there is any...

yes, i think it has one for a scratch track.

yup, and just to get hdmi too. i had also thought that the ac adapter should of been bundled with a module since it cant even be used with the brain, but i guess the logic is they wanted to give it away.
offhollywood may have some cheaper options around the corner, but there is no way around getting at least one i/o for whatever your needs are.

I think all the new dsmc body types will have built in mics. And for everyone wondering why they have new modules, it makes perfect sense.. The old body is very difficult to plug things into, especially the hdmi and sdi ports, and they prob just in life the power adapter so you don't have to buy one later. They also did this so 3rd party companies can design things for you to use... This is not a bad thing at all

Those ports got damaged often. Sending a module in for repair is far cheaper.
That's also a good point, another is they can be swaped to different cameras, for example if I rent a weapon, all I need is the brain, or if my buddy has a jet pack, and I have the base I/o we can trade makes a lot of sense, red has always been modular, this is just taking it to a new level

I have an Audio-Technica XLR mic that requires phantom power. If I use an XLR to 3.5mm adapter plugged into the Raven Base I/O Expander, will I get Phantom power for the XLR mic even when using an adapter?

No Phantom power with Base I/O Expander. However, Offhollywood is working on a module which is audio related and cost effective that hopefully has phantom pwr.

Well, that's probably OK because I plan to use my Raven for more cinematic / better budget projects where we have a sound guy. I'm keeping my Sony FS7 for the run+gun and doc stuff where my own Mic is a bit more critical.

I noticed on the Weapon Base Expander, there's a port that says "Sync." The pictures on the Raven Base Expanders are pretty dark, but it appears to have the "Sync" port as well.

Is that for Jam "Sync" time code? If so, that would be great when working with a sound guy on more scripted projects.

Yes that port can be used for jamming timecode.

yep. every project needs a sound guy. if you don't know one, turn your buddy into one

Someone suggested in another thread (can't remember where I read this... if that person is monitoring this thread maybe they can chime in) that you route your mics through a TASCAM 7D or like... that provides Phantom Power, and then send sound wirelessly to the camera. Not sure how to get the output to the camera via the I/O Expander. Is there an adapter cable from HDMI to 3.5mm? If so, something like the Nyrius Pro should work. Hope so 'cause I already have that. '-)

Really would like this solution cause then you have sound recorded on the TASCAM (DR60d in my case) and an additional two channels on the camera to go along with the onboard mics... assuming the camera records the dual inputs.
