  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Audio on Epic

I set the audio levels quite hi on the EPIC but the audio always comes out very low when we transcode...
Any suggestions guys :)

thanks

Mark,

Are you running stuff through a mixer?

I've done some extensive testing with tones and running things right through post.

How are you setting the EPIC (levels)?
and
Are you coming off a mixer or just using a mic in as a reference?

Just using a powered mic directly into the camera. Same as if I had it in a 5D or a betacam..
don't tell me I have to run it through another device to get good levels... ? that would suck.

Whats your method David... like to hear how you do it.

cheers mate

Mark,

For doc work I do this.

I take two mics into a sound devices mix pre

Boom Chi 1
Wireless lave CH2

I send back split tracks to the EPIC from the mixer via Senhierser wireless transmitters.

Phantom power is taken care of by the mixer.
The transmitters take the the line level in but transmit them at -30 Mic level that the EPIC can handle.
The reciever AF OUT is set to -24

I set all the audio according to the tones one the Sound devices Mix Pre which sends out a 1KHZ reference tone.

I set the EPIC to -24 DB on both channel 1 and channel 2 to give some headroom. (the mix pre has excellent pre amps and limiters so the recorded sound on the EPIC is excellent.
BUT, I also take the "tape out" of the mix pre and send that back to a ZOOM H4 via the 1/4 inch jacks to double record and have a back up.
When I record tones or audio this way the tones come in to Logic or Soundtrack Pro at -12db, giving you a fair bit of headroom on the recording.

If you are using a striaght mic into the camera there are a couple of things you need to check.

-is the mic self powered (generally these mics will require that you set the EPIC to a higher input gain)
-is the mic phantom powered (if it is phantom powered then just make sure you have a fresh batter in the microphone (if it takes a battery)
-check your cables to make sure you are not recording a phase reversed signal (which can end up sounding low and thin)

I'll post some pics later if I can.

Please help: red touch audio metering not showing

Please help: red touch audio metering not showing

For some reason my red touch display is not showing audio metering in the lower right corner. Instead it shows ae, exposure assist and motion stills. I have read the manual and tried all the menu settings i can find to try and bring back the audio monitoring vu meters but have not had any luck. Been at it for at least an hour. Would greatly appreciate some help.
