I am trying to record a basic guide track on my Epic. I plug in a mic and see levels on the display, adjust the levels.

When I transcode in Redcine X there is no audio. The audio menu seems really basic but is there some setting i have missed out.

I am in a 25fps time base.

Mointoring levels while shooting with Epic is available on the display (4-channel level bars on bottom). You can also plug a headset into the audio out on the back of Epic and listen. I'm not having any problems with my Epic-M and audio.

What do you mean by "5-channel level bars on bottom?" Can EPIC actually monitor five channels of audio?

So, EPIC can monitor four channels? I'm a little confused. Aren't there only two audio inputs on the camera (with each input supporting only one channel)?

My guess is the pro-IO module will allow 4 audio in.. (as well as VF and Monitor outs..)

Guys.

Its safe to say that EPIC and Scarlett both currently have 2 channels of mic level audio available through mic level only inputs on the brain.

In the future 4 channels should be available of mic or line level audio when the pro I/o module is released next year.

You can change the input level (recording level) and the headphone output level (monitoring level) on the touchscreen.

Get your hands on some DB pads to convert line level signals coming from a mixer to mic level for excellent audio recordings. This will allow you to shout double or single system with the EPIC as it is right now.

No phantom power on EPIC yet so get yourself a nice sound devices mix pre to take care of all the audio going into the EPIC.

i recorded a test today and could hear the audio through the headphones jacked into the RED epic from behind.
However ,
1 I was unable to see any realtime audio monitoring levels.
2 When I load the clips in RED cine X Pro - there were no audio in the clips. (or I was unable to play it back with the video)

My suggestion (non-sarcastic) would be to regard the audio on the Epic as scratch audio, and record on a separate, standalone audio recorder.

I second this suggestion.

I do quite a bit of audio direct to the camera for doc interviews. Quality and levels are very good. I use a Mix Pre-D for its great preamps and because it provides phantom power and a mic-level out to the Epic.

But a timecode recorder let's you work untethered from the audio, and it makes Epic just that much more flexible. Timecode sync takes about a minute per mag in RedCine.

On my Epic running firmware 2.0.5 the optimum way to record audio is to put in line level and keep the Epic audio low. Putting mic level in directly forces you to increase audio to 50dB, which causes lots of noise. So go in via a small mobile mixer and you'll get great stereo sound and low SNR. This is using Unbalanced (which you can set in the firmware). As your mics and mixer are battery powered this is not going to cause any earth hum issues, so balanced is unecessary. Ensure phantom power is switched off.

As a shortcut, I often use a Zoom style recorder to take a direct feed of the audio, and then use the headphone out to the Epic for scratch audio. That way I get to make two copies of the audio simultaneously, and can control the inputs into the Epic via the remote recorder. Monitoring can be done from the camera headphone output.
