I am beginning a production next sat. and we are planning on using build 16. However the fear has been put into our producer mind that build 16 has Audio sync issues. Is there any truth to this? What would the negatives of using build 16 now that it is a release build?

Certainly not with my camera; we rolled for almost eight minutes, head and tail slating and periodically during the take. Absolutely perfect, dead-solid sync at every point.

Of course you could simply do the test for yourself...

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

There is a thread here in audio section explaining DIP switches setup and proper connection so all will work correct. Once setup properly you will not have any problem.
Test extensively before the shooting so you understand the configuration.
Use lock and jamsinc together for the best results.

We are running through a Sound Devices 302 mixer and into the Red at Line level.

I highly recommend this route; the 302 is small, light, and remarkably clean, very easy for the boom operator to use. It's certainly not practical to ride levels from the camera itself.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Yes there are sync issues and others, with current b16 3.2.5, as listed on the release page ...

I only put the audio related notes here

audio notes

Improved audio sample to video frame synchronization (lip sync accuracy).
Fixed polarity of audio recording relative to MIC and / or LINE inputs.
Added RED-EVF control .... over Audio parameters.
Improved video Genlock (Tri-Level Sync) lock for 23.98, 24.00, 25.00, 29.97.
Time Code output enabled on the LEMO 5 pin timecode connector.
Addition of Pre-Record (10 sec or 30 sec loop) mode.

Operational restrictions of Build 16 series firmware:

Genlock (Tri-Level Sync) for 50.00 fps has not yet been verified.
Audio and Timecode not embedded on HD-SDI outputs.

You are misreading what the release notes are saying about audio.

These are Build 15 and earlier issues that are resolved by Build 16, not issues with Build 16.

I am reading what is posted on the red suppport page for the current release. I also have hands on experiance as sound mixer and as dp. I have worked with camera for almost a year now and the audio is still an after thought.

I'm not questioning your experience, but you said -

Yes there are sync issues and others, with current b16 3.2.5

and that is not a true statement. There are no audio to video sync issues with this build.

Audio Sync question.

Audio Sync question.

I understand what you are saying Scott.

However I wrote those notes, and have done the tests, so once again there are no audio / video sync issues with Build 16.

If that is the case then you should change the wording on your support page from "Improved" to "Fixed" in reference to audio video sync, as well as inform your tech support staff who field phone calls that it is no longer a problem.

Audio Sync question.

Without getting too deep into this, the phrase "fixed" might imply that before Build 16 it was "broken" - which it was not.

I will speak with the support staff to make sure that they are communicating the current status correctly.

Just finished a commercial w/b16 - v2.3.5. Audio was fed at line level to camera via RED supplied adapter cables. The onboard audio during playback on set and in post was out of sync approx. 2-3 frames. Primary audio delivered via DVDRAM was imported and sync'd dead frame. Post is at Sony in Culver City.
