Is there some sort of cable that converts XLR to the stereo mini jack on the base expander to record audio in? Or is it more complicated and you need something like an a-box? Eventually I'll get one of Mark's Omods but until then I need a solution.

what exactly does the abox do aside from these cables

The a-box is just what I used on my epic for audio in. I think it basically does the same thing but I remember trying a cable solution before the a-box and the audio sounded like crap.

Thanks for the links Jarek. I'll give the cables a shot.

I am wondering if one could mod the Epic A-Box to work with the Weapon? I would hate to see our old one go to waste.

Of course. You just need the right jack and to rewire it, heat shrink the shit out of it and all that. However, at just 200 bucks....a new one isn't too dear if you compare to the host of other things we buy. Camtree makes one too that should work. Just $90 bucks.

Does anyone know if the base expander will send phantom power for a shotgun mic? I don't see that listed under the camera or Base tech specs, but maybe I missed it.

This should work, right? Just found this old doohickey in an old box of DSLR stuff. Doesn't look like the ABox has controls for trim.

I have one of those as well from my DSLR days, it should work. No phantom power unfortunately and it's kind of clunky compared to the A-Box. The OMOD XLR module might be the ticket ($2,500) but I'm unclear if you need to also purchase the base expander as well.

WTF. Camtree could have at least come up with a different name.

Yeah they are pretty brutal. They copied the View Factor APU-IDX Battery Plate, which VF sells for $699

Camtree sells it for $150.

They also kind of copied the Wooden Camera 19mm rod baseplate with 15mm adapter and with an Arri style dovetail, it is just $120 bucks.

I should add that I have some of their stuff, and it works fine. I bought it because it was all the dough I could shake loose at the time. And that helped me make money to buy better stuff....which I have done.

The A box is just a nice and more importantly, secure XLR jack that can be mounted to your rig. With cables you'll be dealing with the connector moving around and possibly yanking on it accidentally.

I really liked my Abox for Epic, will probably get the Weapon version soon.

and they dont show how it mounts exactly, but can it screw right into the WC easyriser base? that's what it looks like.

You mount it to a 19mm rod, or 15mm rod with the included adapter. It also comes with a little 19mm nub you can screw on anywhere.
yeah it looks like the 19mm rod nub, has a screw at the end that is screwed into the easy riser, right?

Loved the A-box on the top plate with my ME66 on top of the A-box. A short slice of foam to wrap the mic and some paper tape to bind it and I had an on board half shot gun mic + suspension..
