Just went in to the field and did a little audio test with my red. The first, sorry to say even though I have shot a few hours of clips on it.

To my surprise the 48v Mic input to all channels sounded like a giant snake. SSSSSSSSS. Is this what I should hear? I don't think I could ever use this for almost anything. Im talking a very noticeable hisssss.... Anyone have this problem or is it the way I have it set up. Headphones levels mic what ever. I didn't have a mixer with me at the time but when I switched it over to line input all seemed quiet on the western front. No hisss. Ill plug it in to a mixer tomorrow and go over it a little more when Im not in the heat of the battle. I usually just have the audio tech run a 744 and record all audio in to the digital recording drive not on to the camera.

The hiss sound is a known problem. Don´t use phantom power from the camera. Best is to use line input. That should give you a clean input.

No phantom power yet...

Yea at this point the only reason I would record any audio from the camera would be for a scratch track to make syncing easier. Depending on how bad the hiss is you might be able to get a lot of it out in post, for what you recorded already but hands down the best way to go is to record to a separate device.

Are you using Red cables? I understand that makes a huge difference.

To the "we don't need sound" people: when possible we all mostly use an external recording system or at least thru a nice mixer and in via line input. But there are a fair number of situations where good, clean, phantom input is absolutely essential. I'm hopeful the audio situation will improve very soon.

I agree and I really hope they fix the problem but realistically there is always going to be "problems" with the audio but thats only because its not made to record amazing audio. But in saying that it would be nice for everything to work properly regardless of the level of quality.
