Timecode sync

Timecode sync

a simple way to automatic sync timecode when connected to an external recorder.

That capability already exists... but you do need to establish the "rules" under which the camera should operate.

a) is it the master and therefore it will output timecode

b) is it the slave and it therefore should lock to timecode

c) if you are in N.America, is the video recording at 23.98 fps but audio dept needs timecode at 29.97 fps?


So there we have 3 setup choices ... 4 if you include the camera should run independently of any external timecode or audio equipment.

Good thread, Stuart!

Syncing the RedOne to a Sounddevice is working since build 15, if I recall correctly.

Usually sync is the soundguy's duty. They like to slave the camera to their device and this works reliably. Connected to DC we found that even after 3 hours our RedOne (or the Sounddevice 744t) holded the TC very well.

My request: After each reboot the soundman has to sync the camera. This can be pretty tedious and is error-prone if in hurry this is forgotten. Please keep the external TC through powercycles until the TC is either refreshed or switched off and the internal TC of the camera is used again.

Is this possible?

This is a non exasutive list of things Id like to see.

1. 48V phantom, I think the Sennheiser MKH and schoeps (48V only) mics are the most sensitive to supply voltage, I don't know the current draw for these.

2. Very good mic amp, I don't see any reason why an excelent pre cant be provided. (No critism to the existing mic amps.) Good chips are available these days and there are very good known designs that are relativly simple to implement with lots of head room. Consider a good sounding limiter option.

2a. Line level input option on the XLR.

3. Very Good CMR and RF rejection which is essenatial with all of this data around the place.

4. Full size Neutric connectors. Id also like to see a 5 pin stereo connector on Ch1 and 2 for a stereo mic input, its just paralleled to the xlr's on CH 1 and 2.

4a, Consider fitting a Tajimi Audio connector on the camera same cabling as an SQN mixer. This would be a massive advantage to reduce adaptor cables.

4b Fit a small tag ie a key ring type loop that a dog colar clip connected to the recordists lead can be attached to the camera and recordists cable so if its pulled the strain isnt placed on the connectors. Im sure this can be achieved to one of the top rods but in hand held mode another form of attachment may be needed.

5. A/B and M/S and A (ch1) only B (ch2) only, 3 only 4 only monitoring matrix on the HP output.

6. This needs to be 1/4 not 1/8 jack with a decent driver amp. You can use a 1/4 1/8 convertor if needed but a 1/8 to 1/4 can break off the internal socket.

7. Meter line up should reflect -18 when tone is set to -8db with respect to peak level.

8. An easy way of mounting and powering twin radio mic receivers eg Audio 2020's and other links. This may be a third party mount option but power out put is needed for them.

9. TC issues seem to have been thought about as in the thread above.
