Not sure how to file a ticket on this one as it's too random to define, and I'm not complaining, I just need to know how to work around it.

I was directing one of my shorts all day today, using build 15, and many times today on playback the take would refuse to play stating an audio codec error, until we had gone back a few takes then gone forward again.

Anyone else figured this out? Hopefully this bug is killed in Build 16.

Hi Shawn

Had the same trouble when shooting 4k 2:1 redcode 36 with audio. I was shooting to drive and got this error on playback. I found that you have to leave a few seconds between button presses to avoid it (drive spinning up to optimum speed?). So press playback wait three seconds then press play. Should be OK. It's an issue I've found with drive layback in general if you're too hasty in the button presses.

Unless of course you were shooting cards...

How many audio track did you shoot?

Just wondering if build 15 support 4 audio tracks (line input) on 4k 2:1 format.

Thanks

Pat

It was only two channels of audio to a Compact Flash card. We tried waiting up to 5 seconds and that seemed to lessen the occurance, but not remove it.

I just had the same problem on my first shoot which was a commercial last Friday. Before the shoot, I tested playback from the Red Drive on release build 15 and it consistantly locked up the camera. I would then have to disconnect the battery and completely re-boot. It was obvious that this would not go over well on a large commercial produciton.

During the shoot we recorded the 720 output to an AJA ioHD into Final Cut as a workaround. With twenty clients in the room and the first time out with the camera, this was the only way to make the Red a viable tool within the agency/business demands of the shoot.

Everyone was thrilled with the picture quality, as we reviewed numerous takes in-depth off of the AJA io. It was connected to a large plasma screen which worked out great.

Had I not had the AJA io HD on hand, as well as an assistant recording and playing back the takes, it would have been the last time that I would have been able to use the Red with these clients and the producer. Reviewing takes is critical on a large commercial shoot. I hope this one gets fixed soon. Otherwise working with the camera was a fantastic experience and the shots look absolutely stunning.

Now you do understand that the video HDSDI is a poor sample and is not supposed to be used except as a casual monitor? Obviously you can do whatever the hell you want with it, but there are many reasons (I'm not familiar with all of them) on why you are not supposed to use it for image recording.

I'm an idiot. Just re-read your posts. Yeah I see that using it for separate playback for content could be very useful. Wouldn't want to use it for tech stuff as any errors may be in the HDSDI and not the recorded R3Ds or vice versa.

Having exactly the same problem. Playback from the drive crashes the camera more often than not.
