  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Audio Board Upgrade?

The really strange thing is that my audio guys says he can find no difference between the old board & the new.
I still have to use the Coffey Sound cables with the internal resistor to get a level that is anywhere near acceptable.
I own 2 REDs: #832 & #2653.
#832 I've had for almost a full year, just sent it in last month or the upgrade, the newer RED was shipped with the new board.
We put both up before & after the new board install..he says they are exactly the same...matter of fact, he still wants to use the old audio cables with the built-in resistor on the new cameraas well...says otherwise he needs to plug inline a 'pad' to lower the levels.
As a film guy, I never had to deal with sound other than quieting my cameras if they made too much noise!
I find this new responsibility of audio a real drag.
Hard to figure..
I just hand them over to the sound mixer to rig the cables and tell him to give it back when its done...

I would definitely contact RED.

OK, its there now for a noisy fan issue [#832], I'll have them look at it.
Thanks Jeff.
Have you heard a noticable difference?

Actually I have not worked with the new audio board yet. I'll be sending mine in soon. All the other cameras I've worked with recently had either not yet had the upgrade or we didn't record audio into the camera, so I can't comment.

I'm hoping it works out because I'm desperate to ditch my Denecke phantom power box.

I agree with Jeff B. The levels are still low. I'm not sure if there is a way to adjust the on screen meter. It shows like there are good levels, but when you bring the clip into post it's low, just like the old board.

Ummm, the issue with the old board was not that levels would be too low, but that they were too hot. That's why a limiter was built into the old mini-xlr to xlr cables.

So basically, you are saying that the levels look correct on the camera's meter monitor, but in post they are too low? Sounds like the camera is just not metering the levels correctly, or you have mic/line input selected incorrectly. Could it be you have mic levels selection and then it turned down in the prefs? Of course, that wouldn't explain it metering correctly.
