  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Audio and /i Pins Upgrade Program

Great news! Are the newer cameras being shipped already upgraded - or do they need to be sent in as well? I'm getting my camera next week (#2430) and was wondering if us late-comers have to wait for over 2,000 units to be upgraded before ours is called in!

BTW - I'm so happy about this free upgrade, you guys rock.

First of all, yes, this upgrade program is awesome and stands on its own in the industry. Usually you get this from car manufacturers in order to avoid being sued for having improper brakes installed... Great stuff, really!

But aside of this I am a little disappointed not seeing any answer in the following, already raised questions. It was a long way getting both parties to a commitment that warranty would not be affected and now it generates another which I couldnt ask better:

at the time the i/pin is mounted in the red one camera, does people would get problems to adapt some other lens mounts with it propper lenses? .. somethink like birger, nikon, p+s-technik

Jarred and Erik, earlier I posted this under the lens test section. And it seems to be lost there. So again, please reply on the following questions:
Its within this thread:
Several people have asked both Erik and Jarred/RED about the implications of the new i Pin update for third party mounts, especially the Birger mount. And so far no responses.

I would like to know what the i Pins program changes physically on the RED? Will it make the process of changing mounts more difficult/easier? I would very much appreciate if someone at RED could answer this a s p. My number is soon coming up. Since there are so many wonderful renderings of upcoming cameras and accessories, it would be really nice if RED also could post an illustration of how the i Pins update is implemented.

I gather from what you Erik wrote not long ago concerning i-cable data that there are several ways to make the Birger mount send aperture info to the RED camera. Will REDs new i Pins-program change or add anything to that?

I don't know about you guys: The next thing you know, you're gonna start thinking about making a profit. Now what kind of business is that? (Maybe one that's still there next time you need them?).

I actually sometimes wonder if you guys will ever turn a profit on the Red Ones.
Dave

What makes you think they aren't making a profit?

I'm with augenmensch - it would be nice to actually see what is happening with the i pins update.

didnt i already answer that?

Jared, Please fill me in on the specs for the new audio board. Thanks

You guys need to stop worrying about the whole "specs" thing.

The only way you'll know whether the audio board is good is:
- does it not add horrible extra hiss when you attach a phantom-powered mic?
- does it sound nice when fed sound via line in at standard pro levels?
- does it have a nice mic preamp that you can crank up without a lot of noise?
- does it have some kind of limiter to make it clip elegantly when slightly overloaded?
- is the noise floor low across frequencies?
- does it have any nasty hum characteristics when Red is powered with different sources, has anything plugged in, etc?
- is the DAC / preamp combo really sweet (sound is dimensional, not brittle, can be pushed around without breaking like a happy ball)?
- is the frequency response flat and overall sound similar to good professional audio pre-amps?
- can the headphone output be made really loud? Does it have an added noise floor?

Although you can try to measure these things, exact numbers will always be in dispute.

All of the above things matter more than whether its spec is 48khz/24bit or 192khz/24bit...

The reason we knew that Red would mess it up the first time is that they just spat out the spec and didn't seem to care, respond to ergonomic queries, etc. You could tell based on the vigor of their answering that they didn't have audio at as high a priority as the video...

Of course, now they are making things right in a big way with this upgrade. Excellent!

Hey Jarred,
How many audio/i-pin camera upgrades do you expect to do per day?

Dave

Jarred, the question that I don't believe have been answered is about our RED audio cables....what's going to happen with them? They are already padded, so if the new board is not as hot, those cables will make the audio TOO soft. Are you all going to trade out those cables also?

August shipping cameras?? New Audio Board Installed??

August shipping cameras?? New Audio Board Installed??

I just got my ready to ship email yesterday and I'm wondering if the cameras shipped in August will have the new audio board.

In a earlier email I read shipping cameras were to be shipped with the board but it was also referenced to cameras shipping in September.

Thanks for clarifying this for me in advance.

Best,

I am suppose to receive my camera in September. After reading this thread, I thought all the new cameras would be shipping with the new audio board already installed. However, after talking to my RED representative, he told me that my camera may not have the new audio board installed and that I would have to ship it back at some point. I'm thinking of postponing receiving my camera until the new audio boards are in since I don't want to ship the camera back just for that. I'm not sure why my camera wouldn't have the new audio board already installed. Is it because I have an earlier serial number, and I am only taking delivery of the camera now? Does RED prebuild all the cameras according to serial number ahead of time and wait for the reservation holders to pony up the dough?

My guess is the new audio board will be a new run of parts and they'll probably use those to upgrade existing cameras first. At some point they'll have enough parts to install the boards in new cameras and upgrade cameras that haven't been upgraded. That could be as soon as they get the parts or it might be a month later. If they get 5000 boards all at once I'd guess all new cameras will get them right away. If they only get 500 boards then they'll probably retrofit older cameras first so people who jumped on board early are taken care of first.

They said the board wouldn't be in until at least mid-late September so I would suggest it's not in cameras that are ready/almost ready to ship. This means they have been built already.

I would say take delivery and break the camera in since you will effectively get a free service (shipping included) and can bring up any warranty problems you are having at the same time.

Otherwise you are just without your camera longer and will be on your own for shipping with warranty issues when it does eventually arrive.

I couldn't be happier with the situation, I think it's great!

The general announcement email for the upgrade program has been blasted. It should take a few hours to get to your inboxes. If your camera was invoiced BEFORE September 13, 2008, you should have gotten this email in the next few hours. If you have NOT received it by then and should have, please email upgrades - at - red - dot - com . That is the official email for this program.

We just sent this email to thousands of people so please patient with response times. I urge you to email only if you did not get this email and should have. And, if after you get the second email announcing your serial number group is up for the upgrade program and you have any questions, please also email under that scenario.

The first serial number group will get the second email in the next few days.

Just received it. Very classy service you're giving us. Above and beyond... thanks RED.

Just received the email- thanks…

I also read:
“Any BATTERY PLATES (separate, on a RED CRADLE, on a BATTERY BELT CLIP, or RED QUICKPLATE) and CHARGERS that do not have the current gen mating pin assemblies will be upgraded to current generation.!”

What is meant by: “current gen mating pin assemblies” ?

I was told at IBC that there will be soon an upgrade for the BATTERY PLATES that will allow a hot swap with the batteries…

Is this what we will get now?

Brent - we are about to make the final payment and take a delivery of the camera - from which date / serial number will the new cameras include the upgrade? I assume all the new cameras are being constructed with new parts, or do I assume too much...? :)
