Hi Folks,

If you are using, or looking at using, Thunderbolt and ATTO HBAs to connect to RAID, disk, or tape from a new Ivy Bridge-based Mac Book Pro (including Retina), you should wait before upgrading your system to 10.8.2. This upgrade from Apple breaks all of ATTO's drivers on Ivy Bridge (i7 / i5) systems.

Upgrading these systems to 10.8.2 will cause you to lose connectivity to your disk / tape / network depending on which ATTO product you are using. It affects connectivity via all Thunderbolt chassis.

Mac Pro users, and users of previous MBP, iMac, and Mac Mini systems are not affected.

While this issue was caused by Apple, the ATTO team are working diligently to get the issue resolved.

I'll post more info as soon as I have more news.

Tim

I found this out the hardway last week with my R680... after trying all the different drivers and card firmware versions and talking with Atto Support with no luck I finally found a creative cow post explaining this and went back to 10.8.1.

I hope Atto fixes this soon because I'm locked out of my Aperture library as I upgraded it at the same time haha ;)

Good to know, Tim. Thanks for the update. :)

I hope the Retina we ordered doesnt ship with 10.8.2.
Better yet, the fixed version :)

Good to hear!

@eric, I think it's the drivers that have to be updated to work with 10.8.2 not an Apple fix.

Thanks Tehben.
The Retina was delivered with 10.8.
I havent got around to ROCKET testing yet.

Almost ready...

Almost ready...

:yesnod: Heavy duty testing of the new drivers for the R680, H680 and ThunderStream (ATTO's dedicated RAID Thunderbolt box) have been totally successful. We've passed our results back to ATTO engineering and we should see the drivers released very soon.

10.8.2 causes quite a few issues with my MBP Retina - breaks the drivers for Sonnet Echo Express Pro causing your Red Rocket to having big issues - works fine for a moment, then starts outputting decoding errors. So Red Rocket is unusable with 10.8.2. Also, if you happen to also work with Alexa, forget about trying to copy Alexa Footage off of Sonnet's Echo Express SxS reader - you will get a -36 error. You can make an image and then work from there, but it's one extra step with no control over anything. Went back to 10.8.1., everything working fine there...

looks like 2.03 just released, should work w/ 10.8.2. probably smarter to update after Red decides to update their rocket driver as well.

Hi Tobias,

It would be very helpful if you shared your process to step back to 10.8.1 as quite a few folks with Ivy-Bridge units are running into these problems.

Still no word from ATTO as to when the drivers will be released.

Tim

Hey Tim, rolling back to 10.8 is quite simple. You will however have to download 10.8 from a torrent website if you didn't do a copy when you first had your OS installed. If you download Mountain Lion from the App Store now, you will automatically download version 10.8.2 (or whatever the current version is on that day). So - get a 10.8 copy, put it on an external drive / USB stick, then restart from that drive (system preferences - start volume). Follow the instructions and simply reinstall the OS. Don't worry, all your data will still be there after the downgrade, but do make a backup before you start doing stuff like that. Now that you're back to 10.8., manually download the updates you wish to install. Hope that helps?

BTW: I don't feel bad at all downloading the OS from a torrent site since a) Apple doesn't provide any DVDs with the original OS on it anymore and b) because I already paid for the OS. So all you're downloading is a copy of an OS you already own... If you want, I can find you a link to a good copy, PM me and I'll send it to you.

edit: anybody know where to / how to get an official 10.8.0 version? tried finding a source, but failed...

there is still the problem with 2.0.3 drivers that you still can't use anymore the SAS port of a H680 with a SAS to 4x esata cable for more than one drive... This worked before and with the H380 cards, which was VERY usefull to connect a LTO5 SAS drive and 4 harddisks on a Mac.
Anyone has experience with the Highpoint SAS RR 4322 and RR 2722 cards and LTO drives on Mac ?

They Work here in All Tests

They Work here in All Tests

Hi Filip,

That's exactly how we use it here and in our all of our devices and it's working just as expected. We use 2 4 channel SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 cables (one from each port) and then use SFF-8087 to 4 SATA plug cables internally in the devices - 4 channels from port A and 2 channels from port B connect to our SATA drives and one from port B connects to the LTO drive. This works perfectly with every device we sell.

As for the non-ATTO HBAs and tape - we've tested them all and either they do not work at all, or they work very poorly because the other vendors are focused solely on disk connectivity and don't provide the proper pass through of the tape devices.

I suggest that you check the cable that you're using.

Tim

10.8.2 and new ATTO drivers working here on H680 controllers via Sonnet Echo Thunderbolt expanders on an iMac and MBP retina.

SAS cable (HighPoint fan-out to 4x eSATA) works just fine on the H680 connecting to multiple eSATA devices -- RED Station modules, external HDDs / RAIDs. Also suspecting Filip may have a bad cable or connector somewhere. ATTO are the only controllers I trust to actually control any eSATA / SAS devices I want to connect. HighPoint and Areca hosts don't like tape drives or mixing SATA and SAS on the same controller or other possible configurations. For just running RAIDs, those other adapters are great though. Right tool for the job. I was using Areca host adapters for a while in the Mac Pro as they were properly bootable where the ATTO cards were not. That's all changed now. I can boot a Mac Pro from an eSATA disk connected to an H680 card. :)
