  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attitude adjustment...

A camera brain I bought only six months ago can now be bought for $11,000 less than what I paid. I suppose one could say that's the price of doing business with RED. Unfortunately for a hobbyist like myself that price is too high.

Huh. That really makes zero sense. Since you are, by your own admission, a hobbyist - how does a change in price effect anything at all. It still shoots exactly the same as it did yesterday, before the price change. What changed for you and your projects?

In the past 6 months Canon has announced at least 3 cinema cameras . Each one obsoletes the one before.

I love this industry and have a special affinity to the young and up coming shooters.

This is the key for me. Once I figured this out for myself, you had a customer for life in me. I told you, I drove to RED and bought a t-shirt when I could barely put food in my stomach. :) Maybe I'm crazy, but I refuse to let you be the only one around here. Hahaha. I feel like the biggest fanboy right now...and I guess I just might be...damn it. But as far as I'm concerned you deserve it. You earned it.

Man. Dude.

Eryc,

I truly appreciate the post. I'm not sure that other companies care like we do. You are now officially on my hero list. I am at your service.

Hurricane Jannard.
4K for 4K.

I agree. I'm not really sure how that affects anything. It's not the best situation, but you can still put that camera to work and have it pay for itself. And if the the camera was purchased to facilitate a hobby, as you say, I also don't see how this would change anything. You had the discretionary funds to purchase, and the value was there for you to perform the transaction. What's the issue?

OK... I'm a bit frustrated by some of your reactions. While I'm sympathetic to your situation... consider this. While some of you paid more for your EPIC than the new price announced tonight, you can upgrade your camera to Dragon for $6K. Add up your costs and compare to any other camera system.

No other camera company has ever offered a 100% trade in value to the next gen camera. Actually that has never happened in the history of any product that I know of. And no other camera company has extended the life of a camera like we have.

Think about the big picture here and put yourselves in our shoes. We have put ourselves in your shoes for over 6 years.

Jim

This is one of the most beautiful things about what Jim committed to not so long ago
Making The camera he dreamed of and sharing it with people he believed would appreciate it..

And year after year of RED getting bigger and badder, and even going Hollywood.. still the whole family thing is intact with unbelievable fair prices and adjustments

I understand that the Fanboys may have had to grow up a bit more and adapt to proper behavior to better the face of Reduser
But if we fail to remind the fairly new RED customers just how incredibly lucky we are to have such a company exist, then we may lose the chances
that RED will keep honoring the loyal customers that have been here since day one (or two) as well as the extremely grateful new customers

And why would we want to take away from the positive support that fuels this team daily to carve out the greatest cinema tools of our time

The reason I follow RED is not just all of the amazing things they have already done, but because it is very clear to me that this is a company that does not sleep (literally)
and will be bringing us the future time after time, better than the other companies ever did and ever will and at prices that are making our dreams realtime..

Thanks and Respect

Michael

Jim,
you dont even have to make an upgrade path from Scarlet to Dragon.
Just from Scarlet to Epic x.
Like the R1.
Please consider it.
I know it will make us, Scarlet owners, a very happy bunch.

Know what this means?

More storytellers the world over.

Renters will take a loss. I will be one of them. But on a global scale, that is a pretty fair trade for thousands more filmmakers with cameras in hand. Red One CF sold out tonight?!!? That is amazing...

On behalf of all of them, thanks Jim, Jarred, and every rep who stayed up late taking orders who will be back in tomorrow morning... you guys are on a level.

Holy. Holy. Wow. Thank you so much for the message, sir. I was yelling at the comment, and woke up my girl. She laughed after I finished dancing around though. "Com'on Eryc, go to bed." What? How can I sleep now? Impossible.

Thank you for the kind words, sir. This is the most awesome night ever! I will see you, and Jarred, at RED soon. Promise. And I won't be too shy to introduce myself this time. :) Filmmaking has been with me for a long time now, and ...... there's just too much to explain. USC. A lot of PAIN. A lot of working in thankless environments...not that others haven't endured worse, but this has just been a long road and I feel like I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Screenshot of your comment and posting it to my FB. Hope you don't mind. :) :)

This represents a dream come true. No joke...no maudlin nonsense. No sycophantic stuff. Just immense appreciation.

It's kinda funny.
When Sony releases an excellent camera with an infrastructure and workflow which is priced not to sell or rent, noone complains. Obviously.

When sony releses the specs of two cameras which looks like they will sell in truckloads... In six months... When the firmware is updated... Pretty much like RED has done over the last 5 years... RED adjusts...

So.
What do you think would have the most negative effect on re-sale value?

RED giving its markets to SONY?
Or RED expanding its ecosystem?

The price would unavoididly go down anyway.

The way the R1 sustained it's price over 4 years, was totally artificial and due to it beeing so forewardsighted and well built as it is.
But mostly the value was upheld through the Stages program

From which many has benefitted greatly.

I don't get the logic of the whining. Unless you are living in a place where RED calls all shots, which it fortunately isn't

Hahahaha

Love this move Jim

RED is doing what they need to to keep the edge over the competition. Now an epic and meizler for less than 40k. Thats half of the Alexa and will stay current as long as Jim and Jarred stick to their guns and keep helping us little folk out. I own a scarlet and im not disappointed at all. Yes the market may have more cameras, But its going to happen anyways, thank goodness Jim and Jarred have our backs. Ive never been more excited to be in the game.

Thanks Jim and Jarred and everyone for supporting the cause, making beautiful images for the world. Im glad i chose to invest in RED. Its brought me tons of work, coupled with my ambition, my will to learn, and strive to be better at what i do, theres no way its a loss. Since i got my camera, ive shot a feature, handful of shorts, music videos, commercials and more and introduced me to tons of professionals. This camera system has opened so many doors, im proud to call myself an owner. epic with dragon is gonna be great, and its my new goal.

Keep it real. You guys are busting ass for us and dont for a second think we dont appreciate it. Your hard work, supports my art, which puts food on the table and a roof over my head and i dont have to be stuck in some cubicle.

gushy rant over. :)

alot of you people are forgetting that the epic was NOT originally 35k either. It was actually 27500 which keep in mind is only 2000$ more than what Red MX was just up on the Red site BRAND NEW. The only reason Epic was ever at 35k$$ was because the japan tsunami catastrophe destroyed alot of electronics components factories and thus forced Red to raise the price as the parts became much more expensive. So really this reduction can be viewed as going from 27k to 19k which is not as drastic if that makes you feel any better.

EXACTLY. Just think about it from the artist's perspective.

That said, I get the business side, too. But rental shops have to understand what this is going to be mean in the longterm. As you mention, with the increased number of storytellers out there, it is not difficult to imagine this eventually being a boon to rental facilities. It's all about being creative. I am sure it will work out for everyone.

Nothing changed in that respect, you are correct. But had I waited six months I could have purchased the same brain and have $11,000 more on my bank account and as a hobbyist, none of my projects would have suffered. Simple as that.

I do feel like some of the trust I placed in RED was misplaced, but at the same time I understand I don't represent the typical customer RED is geared for. Anyhoo, I'm sure I will get over this in time like people tend to. Won't post about this again. And now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go and have a wee bit of a cry in the corner.

Yes, I'm kidding.

More storytellers does not mean more budgets or more viewers. Both of those are mostly finite.

We all need an "attitude adjustment" every once in awhile. Right?

This is amazing news. Revolutionary to be exact, although that is the RED brand coming to fruition. I am just feeling uneasy about the language the RED team are using when they say that they "are unusure of what the path might be". I don't know if I am reading things the wrong but does that not mean that you guys are neither willing to confirm nor deny that an upgrade will happen? I thought the question was how? not if...
