  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

atomos ninja? anybody using this with a red?

I can try tomorrow, until now we used it with the AF101 and the FS100 only.

Might be difficult, since it definitely doesn't like progressive signals via HDMI, only PsF.

Look at the Atomos Samurai. It will record from HD-SDI and takes a wider variety of signals. You can order now and it should be shipping in quantity after its official release at IBC.

It doesn't work with our RED One, neither the Ninja nor the Ki Pro Mini. But the latter is certified for the Epic.

Overview

The OR-XDI is a rugged, portable, battery powered HDMI to SDI and SDI to HDMI cross converter.
This unit is designed for use with cameras that use an HDMI output to feed an external monitor
while allowing the same feed to be converted from HDMI to SDI with embedded audio, in order
to deliver high definition video and audio to camera assist, Directors, Producers and others in
the video village that require a high quality video feed. It can also be used the other way to take
the 3G, HD, SD-SDI output from production cameras to feed both the HDMI input of an external
monitor while simultaneously feeding the 3G, HD, SD-SDI to other locations and equipment.
The OR-XDI can be powered via a wide variety of Marshall Battery mounts, consumer
type 12vDC EIA power adapter, or optional broadcast standard 4-pin XLR power connection.

Features
Battery operable 7.2vDC or 14.4vDC (Marshall small battery compatible) no AB or V-Mount
Rugged Metal Alloy case Only 3.91” long (4.96” including BNC connectors) x 2.28” wide x 1.38 high
Weighs Only 7.6 Ounces (without battery)
3G/HD/SD-SDI Input and Dual 3G/HD/SD-SDI Outputs
HDMI Input and Output Dual size mounting holes (12 x 1/4-20 and 4 x M4)
 EIA 12vDC External Power Jack
4-pin XLR 12vDC Input available as an option
HDMI to SDI, SDI to HDMI conversion including Audio
 Automatic input port switching
 Automatic video format detection
Built-in SD format interlacer for DSLR while recording (480p to 480i conversion)
USB service port for future upgrade
Status LEDs indicate Link speed and status.
8 position piano switch for easy configuration. (input selection, auto mode, etc.)

Setup

The OR-XDI requires 5.5vDC to 16vDC either through the supplied 12vAC power adapter, Marshall small
battery adapter (7 or 12 volt) or optional 12vDC XLR 4pin adapter.
Cross conversion is automatic when all 8 of the piano dip switches are set to the Down “Off” position.

Looks pretty cool. How do these units work when shooting 120 fps?

Like Jeff said,
The Atomos Samurai is more suitable for the EPIC, as it has HD-SDI instead of HDMI.

broadcast sdi bandwidth limitations will only let your record up to 60p. and you'll need 3g or dual link to do that at 1080 i believe. only way to record the overcrank is to record on r1 or epic first at 120 fps, and play out from the camera into the recorder at your timebase. at that point you might as well get a rocket system on set to do encodes and not hold up the camera...

I have a Ninja. My friend has an Epic. Haven't had time to try it.

Although Samurai or Sound Devices PIX or AJA Ki Pro might be better suited, I agree.

What I really want to see is one of those things with a LUT box on it. Epic's on board color controls are too limiting IMHO.

If you could spit out sweet-looking images into a DNxHD or ProRes Quicktime from the camera, that'd be awesome.

Blackmagic need to make a DaVinci-in-a-box and call it the Sweetener.

Requirements are LUT support, onboard noise reduction, and 2 realtime secondaries.

You pipe in a 1080p Red HD-SDI feed (RedLogFilm preset) and it outputs a 1080p HD-SDI feed of client-pleasing sweetness, plus DNxHD or ProRes files - and a DaVinci project so that you can load that look up as a starting point if you feel like going back to the R3Ds and tweaking it further :P

Anyone else want that too?

Nice find! Might actually use that for another setup...

The point of the Ninja is to record higher quality material than the FS100, AF100, etc are capable of onboard. Red One and certainly Epic record higher quality than the Ninja. Why would you want to do that?

Arri Alexa makes a nice-looking (full debayer downsampled to 1080p) Pro Res file right out of the camera which has a lot of grading latitude and which people can edit straight away.

Red makes R3D raw files only. Which makes impatient editors sad. Because:
- most editors don't have RedRocket cards in their system.
and
- and there is no GPU-assisted decode of Red files

So R3D decoding relies on the CPU, which means it is sloooooow and/or low-quality.

Unless Red:
- makes a module that writes ProRes or DNxHD files out of the camera in addition to R3D
or
- allows high-enough-quality realtime GPU-assisted Red decode so anyone with a modern computer can view R3Ds at high quality
or
- enables that RedCode RGB option they've been mentioning about since 2007

...Red One and Epic owners are going to lose jobs to Alexa owners over this.

Which we don't want to happen anymore :)

Granted, some people may still like the simplicity of a camera that spits out ProRes without 3rd party attachments. But it might at least help on a job or two.

Bruce,

exactly year and half ago I was jokingly asking RED to make a sort of "Alexa" module that means ProRes or DNxHD files 1080p recoding box.

Nothing happened in that way till today!!!

I have got impression that 1080 is "banned" by RED in any development way???!!!

The Red preview off SDI has aliasing and other issues. The quality is not acceptable for recording.
