  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atomos Blade Frustration!!!!!

I have been on many many shoots with my Atomos Blade (and each time I will have a video clip get corrupt/not play). Yesterday at a shoot I had a whole card have only one playable clip the rest were corrupt This is so frustrating and scary!!! I bought this unit for backup/dailies/quicker workflow & turnaround times. I have a Atomos Samaria and that has rarely let me down. Anyone else having this issue, please let me know and how to fix it (using the correct SSD that Atomos recommends on their website too).

I had a problem with my original Samurai, and a little later my SSD died completely. It was a recommended one, but after I got it replaced I never had a problem. It could be the SSD, but I'm not sure of course
 
Okay, will order new ones thanks, btw what SSD do you use? I use Sandisk, please let me know thanks!!!
 
Corsair Force 3 I think it was, but it was replaced by the same brand under warranty. Worked ever since, but I don´t use it that often.
I was thinking to upgrade to the Blade for an upcoming project to get the new screen. Is it worth it? (problems aside)

Samaria? I doubt that. ;-)

I use 500GB spinning laptop drives in my Atomos - much more robust and less prone to sudden death than SSDs.
And even IF one fails, the data is at least recoverable in most cases.
If a SSD dies, your footage usually dies with it.
 
yes it is a great 2nd monitor too!!!!! My clients who rent me and my RED out love it!!!!! Def worth it for sure!!!!!

You are certainly right about that Frank. When mine died, it was dead. Tried to hook it up different ways, but no luck. Sent it back to Corsair and they confirmed it was gone and everything on it.

Never tried spinning drives as I´m very often on location in rough places, so I never thought about a spinning disk. Maybe I should.

No problem good sir :) I too might look into the spinning drives plus they are like $50 on amazing can't beat that!!!!!
 
I have had the worst luck with SanDisk SSDs. I suggest Crucial or Samsung. I really like the Crucial M500 960GB models. Flawless. I also suggest staying away from OCZ, especially as they are now defunct, some old stock may be coming out at cheap prices. Don't fall for it.
 
I did have a problem with a spinning drive for my blade. I was shooting a rock concert and the drive kept on dropping out of record and corrupting the files. I reformatted but it dropped out again so switched to an ssd and no problems. When I returned from the concert I checked the drive did a low level format and it has been great ever since... At the concert I was located very close to the speakers so I think it was the compression waves from the speakers may have upset the drive platters in some way? I'm not sure that is even possible but I've never had an issue like this before....
 
In addition to what's said above:
I'm using Ninja and Samurai Blade. More problems with Ninja. I confirm that having all the files readable and ok is pretty rare case. Almost every time there's a glitch. Cheap media like 320GB 2.5 HDDs performs even better than recommended SSD drives. Strange things happening to Ninja HDMI interface. Though I'm used to SDI and often have to put Atmos H2S & S2H converters in the chain. But it seems pretty weird to me that my Ninja doesn't want to capture HDMI from BM DeckLink MiniMonitor. Is it some sort of HDMI that I don't know? Unlikely:) It works fine with RED cameras HDMI signal. But with Nikon D600 there's always a glitch. At least once. As about DecLink - I can't find the workaround, it's always showing a complete mess on the screen...

I'm specially interested in DeckLink -> Ninja connection. Any experience, thoughts, suggestions?
 
I have used 2 samurai blades for all kinds of camera and situations and use sandisk extreme pro SSD's. I one unit died shortly after receiving it. just would not power up. Atomos replaced it. other than that I have had zero issues as far as working units are concerned

Yeah, spinning drives don't like certain vibrations like deep bass on loud concerts, or helicopters. I also would not use them on a jet-ski ore anything else with violent/sudden movement. For anything else, they working fine for me, even for normal shoulder work.
 
They had a firmware update 4 months ago that treats SSD's much better.
