Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of getting the Atomos Blade as a little on set recorder: http://www.atomos.com/samurai-blade/ and wanted to see if people are happy with the performance on the EPIC and most importantly for my sort of shooting....can this baby handle slowmotion footage ?

thanks for the help.

I have one, well the Samurai which is exactly the same pretty much. It works and triggers fine. There's still an issue with it adding an extra set if numbers in file name matching so not completely working as a proxy recorder but close. It will only record what it gets through the SDI, exactly like Reds own proxy recorder when it comes out so no direct over ranking. But you can get it to record it if you record the highspeed onto the SSD's on the epic then playback and hit record on the Atomos. It's a fidgety workaround but definitely works. There's no off board recorder that will record high fps if they're taking a live SDi feed as the RED doesn't output high frame rates out of any output, only internally.

hmmmm Interesting, you can only get the recording trigger function through HD-SDI though and not the HDMI hey Brigham ?
how are you going with SSD space in relation to the SSD's ro what gets recorded on the Epic ?

Never tried HDMI...hate HDMI outside of home. But technically I don't know if HDMI can even pass a trigger like SDI...after all its a consumer connector while SDI is industry design and standard.
A 500gb drive will give you approx 5 1/2 hours of Prores HQ or DNXHD. I would also avoid DNXHD as Atomos are having many bugs with it...dropped frames, stopped recording, missing entire clips, partial clips. Prores is flawless though.

I'm surprised, but it seems like they do :
"We have teamed up with all the leading camera manufacturers, including Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, JVC, RED and Arri to give you frame accurate timecode and start/stop triggers over both SDI and HDMI from almost all cameras. We also added a tally lights so everyone knows when its show time.
We even include Lanc and rolling time code trigger for those older cameras that don’t have start/stop flag protocols on board – we watch the time code and trigger record when the camera starts rolling!"

I have the old one and has saved me several times, the new one is just even better!!!!! Can't wait for the new ones

Looking to purchase the Blade in the next day or two until I stumbled upon this thread. Regarding the slow motion, are you guys saying the Blade can NOT capture the high frame rates of the Epic? I just called Atomos and they weren't sure. I shoot a lot of high frame rates and I am looking for a recorder, but if it can't capture above 23.98 then it's useless to me. Have they fixed this in a firmware update? Thanks for the help.

You can record high speed clips to the Blade, it is just a two step process.

Epic does not transmit high frame rate images in real time. You can play back the high speed shot on the Epic, and record that to the Blade.

That is true but it's at a low debayer.....aliasing is present.

Matthew,

Is the quality too low to justify this purchase for this specific job? Specifically, will the Pro Res be an acceptable quality for the edit? We will be shooting at 48fps if that detail is needed.

The latest firmware finally fixed the extra letter added to the Epic file name. So, now it is exact. I believe this came out within the last couple weeks.

Alex

does anyone know if the Blade has cured the issue with corrupted frames in Avid clips that the regular Samurai has? We had a absolute nightmare with that problem on a drama shoot this summer.
