On my day off from the 3D feature I'm working on here in Albuquerque, NM I took my dive gear over to NM's famous "blue hole" it's a small hole in the desert....bell shaped and 86ft deep!

had a blast and decided to give a shout out to my friends at Element Technica!

Thanks for all the swag guys!! I wear it everywhere ....really!

p.s.- Can't wait for the "DEEP ATOM" !!!!!!! Finnally shoot some 3D EPIC underwater footage

some quick gopro shots of the rest of the dive today....

This is the amazing view of a hole in the middle of the New Mexico high desert....4600ft ....my first "altitude dive"

reminded me of "journey to the center of the earth"

The view up from 86ft down into the earth......corrected depth for altitude is around 100ft.

such a cool spot I'll never forget it.

lots of tombstones at the bottom memorializing dead divers......and this really cool sculpture...

Hi Pedro, you got my attention:) How are the underwater test charts shooting wide angle through flat glass port going? The world is waiting for the results and you are having fun...:)

Thanks for sharing

After I did that test shoot I left for a feature in Sonoma, CA.....wrapped that and finnally got back and 6 days later left for this 3D feature in New Mexico (Atom/epics)...

So needless to say I havn't had time to go thru the footage and prepare the full review .......sorry! Priorities! Money first! (not getting paid for tests!)

So I'll be back in LA(home) around sept.20th.....so hopefully sometime after that you'll see a post.

but in sum I got what I expected....they performed very well with the expected softness and distortion around the edges.....distortion can be corrected in post....softness not so much... but the question for my post guy (pablo q) is would it be acceptable enough for 3D features.....might even have them do a post conversion on some of the footage

Pedro!!

You rock! That's is pretty damn cool.

The hat is a collector's item ;)

That said.....I need a new hat Joey...... ;)

no worries, glad you are having right priorities and fun - that's what counts in life :smile5:

What Howard Hall did in his 3D movies was to build a massive front flat port so, instead of shooting wide angle, he could shoot macro of even the biggest of sharks. That, and careful framing...otherwise the edges look like if someone put a bucket of rainbow-coloured vaseline over the port.

Dome ports are heaps better but suffer from field curvature, which can not be corrected in post (the image plane is not flat), especially if you exceed about 90 degrees viewing angle. If HD was brutal to underwater imaging ...4k is a killer and more often than not a little pissy HD camera will produce sharper images than IMAX.

I spent over a decade designing and testing underwater optics and this time I think I nailed it. As soon as my Epic turns up, I will be able to post some charts to pixel peep. Also, some real life images too - just to see what my invention means in real life. Expect unexpected :)

Pedro....looks like you are using the stock GoPro housing with dome port yes? It won't focus with the dome port....maybe you know already, but there are a few aftermarket conversions for that little camera with flat ports and then everything is sharp and in focus underwater.....heaps better results...i think try Eye of Mind for housing....i use those little cameras all the time...in fact off to Galapaogs with R1 & Epic and 3 GoPros....

yeah i know....just didnt have time to order the underwater lenses.... I will get one eventually....
