Posting this from the theatre, the credits just finished rolling. The film looked great on the 2K digital projection. Highly recommend it if you like Ayn Rand's work or positions. I also couldn't help but notice Light Iron did the DI. :D Was it finished in 4K? I for sure would like to add it to my RED RAY to-buy list.

Anthony-
The Atlas Shrugged DI was done in 2K by colorist Ian Vertovec on the Quantel Pablo. The film was shot by DP Ross Berryman, who did an amazing job on a tight schedule. Shot last summer, Atlas Shrugged was one of the early MX features, and it's exciting to finally have films being released that were captured on the MX sensor (most theatrical RED releases until now were shot prior to the MX sensor upgrade program).
Atlas Shrugged also took advantage of REDCode 42, which, at the time of production, was a new format that visibly improved images along with the MX sensor so that large format projection such as 35mm prints look breathtaking on large screens.
Light Iron is proud of the images we produced on Atlas Shrugged as we employed our OUTPOST systems with operator Von Thomas to produce on-set dailies for editorial and iPads. Atlas Shrugged is just one example of films that continue to demonstrate how independent films can look and sound amazing thanks to the powerful workflow RED offers every film, big and small.

Has there actually been ANY film shot on RED with a 4K DI and released in 4K?

I'm so going to get in trouble for this, but yes there are. All Jim and Jarred's home movies. Just Kidding. I dont know the answeer to that. I do know a lot of movies go through the 4k DI but are released at a lower res. After seeing TSN I want to watch everything Light Iron works on. They do an amzing job.

Its truly a testament to RED and Light Iron's versatility for being able to work on everything from The Social Network to Atlas Shrugged. Pretty awesome!

Thanks, guys, that really means a lot to us. More than you know:-)
Actually, you are right in suggesting that most films are not distributed in 4K, even if they embark on a 4K DI, which is still rare. While there are a few exceptions, the overwhelming majority of theatrically released films are conformed, colored and mastered in 2K. Storage, performance and cost are the logical reasons why.
That said, I can say that we are doing our first theatrically released film in 4K right now! I'm not sure if I'm able to officially announce it yet, so I'll ask the director tomorrow. What I can say is that it's an amazing film shot anamorphic by one of the best directors in the business. Creating a smooth 4K pipeline is easier said than done, which is why we rely on Quantel for the final stages of 4K execution. When we deliver this film at the end of the week, I think the story behind how it was done will be very interesting to the community. I will keep you posted.
