  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Aston Martin DBS shoot on Epic M with Canon Mount. No tweaking in post.

Great clip and good edit, nice idea with the mirror at 01:34!
What i miss is a little move, with a slider or jib...

Thanks for the positives. And the negatives. I only have a small slider, and that won't support the weight of the EPIC. Not in a fluid movement anyway. I only posted the vid so you guys know what can be done in camera in two hours with two flat panels of neon lighting. I really appreciate all your feedback though. Its great to get some.

Very nice work. LOVE that Canon 100! Keep it up!

very nice.. sick car!

So it's REDColor2/REDGamma2 straight out of the camera?

Yep Demetri. Nothing touched. Almost all of it shot at 320 ISO. I reckon 800 gets a bit noisy. Not the camera's fault. My expectations. The EPIC sees what the human eye does. At least that's my take on it at the moment but I'm hardly a technical DP. I shoot more from a raw heart. That's raw not RAW.

In my opinion, sliders and dolly moves have been a bit abused over the past few years as everyone seems to have one, especially with all of the DIY and entry level ones available. There are times when they are very effective and a good choice, but I don't mind seeing locked off shots that are well composed too. Sometimes that can be just as effective.

All I know is that I wanted this car after watching the video. :-)

Hey Brett,

2 hours shooting time hey, great coverage !... looks like you had 3 cameras going at one point.
Lighting is nice and simple too.

The salesman really new his lines hey, for you to get so much... or did he ad lib all the whole way.

Over all, good stuff. :)

Drop me an email. I'd like to know if you can slip in some small jobs for us someday.

Great video.
tests I've shot that looks similar are completely noisy. Did you use daylight balanced lights?

Some nice looking shots in there for sure, but overall the video felt flat to me.

The car should be the star, not the salesman. A little camera movement, some music and a good grade would help enormously IMHO.

I have to agree with that.

Once we see the salesman up front, I just want to see and hear the car with his VO.

Plus, you are talking about a performance car with no screamingpastthecameraOMGhowfastarewegoing footage?

But that's what everyone does with car commercials. Kind of predictable. :-)

Do you have a better way to do a car commercial? Cause every time I've seen one that tries to do different it's been terrible, I remember one with dancing animals driving a, I think it was a hyundai with dancing robots in the background and the song about shuffling all day it was cringe inducing.
Give me a good old fashioned cars speeding down a road with cinematic grading and cinema scoring any day.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind seeing cars going fast, but i always love when they think outside the box a little and add some cool elements. Audi, BMW, Mercedes have all done ads over the years that have shown some creativity and were fun to watch. Honda as well, and I'm sure there are others. i guess I was referring to run of the mill driving ads.

I really like you off framings, and like the unconventional contrasty night approach, but I would use bigger/more diffused ligths, and put it closer to the subjekt/objekt. If its this kind of promo, with no fancy driving shots, you really need to show me some more of the interior details in ultra close beauty..It becomes a lot about the man, all though I really like the dark shots of him not speaking. They make you want to be where he is..in the car!
What shutter did you use? The motionblur looks a bit strange and videolike on vimeo...
