I shot the special effects for an upcoming comedy feature and made this breakdown video for one of the shots. Only used the computer for compositing - all the elements are real. I sculpted the asteroids in Super Sculpey, I'm not a professional model maker but they turned out pretty good.

The motion control shots were shot on Scarlet 5K / 5 and 12 fps and the explosions on Epic 2K 240fps.

The effects were done as a favor for my friends and I got to play with motion control and exploding cereals in my living room. It was a lot of fun.

It's a little bit "Spaceball'esque" - perfect for the tone of the movie.

Here's the direct link to the video for tablet users, for some reason I can never play full screen on my iPad when watching embedded videos from other Redusers.

Here are the twins during construction.

That's great, thanks for posting. Love Old School compositing of models, I think will be quite a bit of that in the new Star Wars.

Thanks guys - I also hope they shoot models for new Star Wars!

This is great!

Even though I work daily with CG, this kind of thing is what got me hooked on VFX when I was younger. I still think there's tons of benefit in doing it this way.

Super cool. Thanks for sharing. I love old school VFX techniques.

In case any of you are real old school model fans, you might want to join this group on Facebook...especially if you want to do something really cool in the coming months...
