Hi RED Scarlet users,

try to find out what aspect ratio option there are on RED Scarlet in reality:
Its only HD 1,78:1 or is there the possibility to shoot 2:1 or 2,35:1 anamorphic? i read the manual but isn't clear at all (Web/Manual)
Only HD?

I think most of Scarlet picture/REDcode possibilities are just for "future freedom" in our modern production world and because of this so important for me :wink5:

Can anyone give me a reliable answer?
Is there an OS Update coming making things real?

thanks guys!

So I cannot shoot 16:9 with the $15K camera that, in all likelihood, most of us will have to wait another 3-6 months to receive?

The scarlet currently has 4k 2:1 and 4khd which is 16:9. This has been covered somewhere else on the forum

The current Epic Beta build has the following options - not as many Ana modes as you've listed.

5K = 5120x2700 up to 96fps
5K 2:1 = 5120x2560 up to 120 fps
5K WS = 5120=2134 up to 120 fps
5K ANA = 3296=2700 p to 96fps
4K = 4096x2160 up to 120fps
4K HD = 3840x2160 up to 120fps
3K = 3072x1620 up to 160fps (but only by manually entering it)
2K = 2048x1080 up to 240fps (but only by manually entering it)
2K WS = 2048x854 up to 300fps

I think that's all of them in build 2.0.5

Thread discussing 3K on the Epic (that isn't in the current release build - but is in the Beta) http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?68594-EPIC-3k&p=894210#post894210

didn't get it arnold. sorry. i am not that slangy you are writing down in this forum. maybe you didn't get my german reducer slang.
i copy paste tech specs from red.com from tech specs of each camera...no imagination:) if anyone have the link to the right thread. pass it over to me please

The only limitation I've ever heard mentioned between the Scarlet and the Epic are frame rates. Not frame sizes. I don't think RED is dumb enough to make it where you can't "shoot 16:9 with the $15K camera that, in all likelihood, most of us will have to wait another 3-6 months to receive". I'm pretty sure they have heard of that aspect ratio.

My understanding is that you don't shoot 16:9, you shoot Red's 2:1 format and then have the option of cropping it to any aspect ratio you'd like. You are also provided with in-camera frame guides to use with pretty much any aspect ratio you could want.

Quad HD is 3840x2160. This is twice the width and height of 1920x1080 (16:9).

I've been asking this question around here ever since the camera was announced.

Someone who actually received theirs should come here and just put this question to rest. That is the only way to get an answer.

My understanding is that these are the shooting modes available:

http://www.redgrabs.com/up/1320458422.jpg

So basically Red shooting modes are designed similar to Digital cinema delivery specs which at their greatest dimensions use a 1.9:1 ratio. You use frame lines and crop from there. The only exception is the 4kHD mode which is 16:9 quadHD.

That said, I think not all of these modes are available in shipping scarlets. I dont think 1k is available yet, but I could be wrong.

I sent the following to Tonaci shortly after he received his:

Hey, man. I know that you're busy like the rest of us, but if you have a chance I was wondering if you would mind filling me in on a question that I posted in the "1st Scarlet..." thread. I'd really appreciate it, man. We're looking forward to getting our Scarlet and shooting Red for the first time, so if this seems like an ignorant question then I apologize.

A quick question, Tonaci: Are you given different options in terms of aspect ratio on the Scarlet? I would assume that in theory you can just shoot 1.90 aspect ratio and crop it later, but can you set the camera to record 2.40 aspect ratio?

[EDIT]And, for that matter, can you set the different aspect ratios for each resolution? Like a 4k, 3k, 2k and 1k at 2.40 aspect ratio?

He responded with the following:

Sorry for the late reply..it has been nuts. I will definitely answer all of these questions in the article.
For now, the scarlet is really basic.. you can't shoot 2.40.. but my opinion is.shoot full frame..put 2.40 frame guides which will give you wiggle room in post and output a 2:40 slice. =)
article coming before the weekend =)

Scarlet really needs widescreen modes if for no other reason that they'd probably allow a few more FPS just like on Epic.
I believe Red when they say that they are squeezing as much out of the Scarlet's computing power as they can, but this is one of the main things that I am holding out some hope for in a future update. Being able to shoot 2.40 at faster frame rates in these resolutions would be amazing...

4096x1707
3072x1280
2048x854
1920x800

If there was a way of getting those resolutions at slightly higher maximum frame rates it would add so much to the camera. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if that is in any way a possibility though.

sure. its all mathematic....for me it is confusing about details in the manual and details on the tech specs on red.com.
i also saw the "monitor guide" part in monitoring section in Scarlet manual.

question:
its right that scarlett shoots pixel aspect 1:1 at max 4K (4096x2160) with image aspect ratio 1,9:1 maximum?

on epic you have the option to shoot anamorphic on a image (5K ANA for example ) with image ratio of 1,22:1 with ANA lens?
"unsqueze" it an you will have 21:9 image. squeeze it for FAZ and on cinema lense again. right?

If you go 2K or 4K WS on Epic its already "unsqueezed" ca. 2,4:1 image ratio.
Is there a WS mode also on Scarlet? Cropping is lost of image size..

Or its only "POST" workflow doing our image aspect ratio?
Is there someone who can explain it in this special case?

thx. i know its in detail but cinema isn't TV :)

4khd is 16X9. but as of today (mid December 2011) the 16x9 output on the SDI is "letterboxed" slighty on a four sides. nothing of the image you are recording is cropped, but if you were panning to record the SDI stream as a new master, well...
the Epic at least has a 4K (in addition to 4khd) setting which carries image to left and right edges on SDI but stil not on top or bottom. it is of course not 16x9.
if a firmware update released had a 4k16x9 (similar to RED one) that probably would fix it.
