Is it possible to add the black bar on the LCD to have 2.35.1 aspect ratio in the Scarlet.
I want to rent it but i want to make sure we can. IF not we need to put tape on the LCD?

Hi Pascal,

There isn't a default 2.40 shooting aspect ratio but there are frame guides for when you are shooting 2.40 (in fact you can pretty much set up any custom frame guides you like).

This gives you a slight advantage in post in that it will give you a bit of flexibility if you are needing to re frame vertically.

just to back up brad's reply... custom frame guides for 2.40 are easy to set up and work brilliantly. you get a thin black line showing you the cutoff, but you still see what is beyond the lines so you can keep better track of what you're missing outside your framing. Redcinex also automatically stores those guides in the metadata (I'm not sure if that's exactly how it works) so if you want to crop before export you can do that real easy.

You can change the colour of the line.

That said, it would be nice if the camera did 2.4:1 WS internally... At 4k WS (4096x1707) you'd be saving over 20% REDmag space ( that's ~30mins instead of ~25mins at 6:1 on a 64gig mag) and theoretically, the camera should be able to do 4.5k WS at 24fps on Scarlet too. I'm not as much of a resolution-diehard as some RED users, but 4.5k would be pretty great.

For me it's not so much the resolution as the crop factor, and that would be a welcome improvement - but as some have pointed out it's unlikely since there may be throttling to differentiate Scarlet from Epic. As much as I love the resolution, I would even take the larger frame downsampled to less than 4K if I could get the Epic's crop factor.

Actually, if you record to an external recorder with Look Around enabled, you'll get the full 5k/1.3x crop factor (entire sensor, full debayer) downscaled to your 1080p output which you than record (via HDMI or HDSDI recorder). Plus it's also a cleaner signal at high ISOs since you're recording the image pre-r3d compression. So, right now, as of fw3.3.x, you could have up to "5k"/30fps-at-1080p on a Scarlet...

Kristin, as for darkening outside the guide, not that I know of.... Ironically, I have a hard time even seeing the guides when I'm concentrating on the visuals, so shading would probably be better for me. Of course when it's 1.9:1 or 16x9, there's plenty of room for reframing, but still. I'd rather have 2.4:1 WS modes that save REDmag space (or give increased resolution ala 4.5k).
