  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Article just posted by No Film School Red Epic vs Panasonic GH4

I see no emails, but if you wanted to come up here I would be happy to assist and do a sanity check on any tests you wanted to perform (time allowing). :D

No, no, no. The person giving tips on how to do tests should be the one performing them, don't you think? We give you the cameras and film the process and then post the BTS video and the results on our page. Deal? We are in Hawaii at the moment but get back into Oregon on Tuesday.

Why you wouldn't just shoot a chart if you were looking to do a sharpness test is beyond me...

We were out shooting lighting/talent tests first and foremost. Grabbed these at the end. Doubt it would make a difference either way though :)

Ah ok... so its more just some random footage from your other tests than a specific test itself.

Fair enough :)

Regardless of camera preference I think redoing the tests with more people can always be fun! Once upon a time JJ wanted to do a shoot out of all the high end systems, but no one wanted to sign on to it. I think tests are fun and am always down guys, and whatever the outcome I think its always worth while for shooters to discuss these things and look into tool sets. No harm ever came from testing or prep days, just seeking of knowledge

I think gh4 could be a good b cam but i dont understand whats the point of doing a sharpness test when not focusing the same point at same distance. Would be more logic to have set the focus to the roof on both cameras.

It was close. At f 8 and from that far away what can you do outside of digital zoom/edge focus (which we always do). They were close and we did tests with other lenses with similar results

The thing about using a baked, 8bit, highly compressed camera as a B-Cam is that then it becomes your lowest common denominator in terms of grading, and thus the limiting factor for your entire sequence in terms of how far you can push any shot.

Quick GH4 question for anyone still prepared to answer questions about them... How's the rolling shutter? Is the camera usable on the move or does it need to be locked off and slower pans and whatnot?
