  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Artbeats Red Reel

Awesome, Phil. Can't wait to start sending you 4K stuff.

For any of you guys thinking about shooting and selling stock footage, I have had a great experience with Phil and Artbeats so far. He's treated me with respect, and even artistic encouragement. A first-class guy all the way.

Looks amazing Phil.

I'm going to sign up in the morning - i've got a few things over here in the UK shot on red over the past few days - anything you need let me know - im doing a tour sometime soon getting lots of locations.

Andrew.

Phil,

Still taking new applications for footage suppliers? I didn't see any signup info but we're interested...

Thanks in advance,

$399 a clip seems kinda pricey though...

When compared to other professional stock agencies, they charge more for SD clips. Heck, have you ever tried getting permission to use a clip from news footage? You'll be in for a surprise. 399 is very, very fair - remember, the fee has to make it worthwhile for the cameraman/DP to shoot the footage in the first place.

if I hand in a footage but wanna use the same footage in my film
what happens?

You own the intellectual rights to your footage, so I guess they could complain but couldn't really do anything about it.

Perhaps if this happened often they may not want to rep you but really, as long as they are making money from your clips...all is well.

I haven't seen a contract from a stock company that restricts your "personal use" of the clips but the exclusive contracts will not allow you to sell it elsewhere, even by yourself.

Also, remember all contracts have ending dates...so you could wait til then if using the clips for your personal project is not encouraged.

But to be certain, just ask them before handing over your footage.

Some pro stock perhaps, artbeats no. They routinely offer entire collections on HD for around $1,000 and that's like 30-40 clips.

Also I just got a quote from Universal Studios on HD stock footage for less than that. Just saying the premium for '4K' is quite high and I suggest they revise that down as more and more 4K stock footage is going to explode onto the scene considering how many cameras there are. And the making it worthwhile to the shooter angle doesn't really catch either- there are plenty of HD and 35mm stock footage shooters out there with way more expensive packages than a typical RED kit, so.... Taking RED as an excuse to charge 35mm and up pricing is kind of the opposite of why this camera exists.

I mean whatever, they can charge whatever they feel like, but at $399 a clip I'll just go shoot my own footage.

The value is really more about the content than the cost of the acquisition equipment. We realize that people can shoot their own material if it's convenient. But what if you need a forest fire, Learjet cloud flythrus, gyrostabelized helo aerials of NY, distant locations, expensive special effects or just a snow scene in the middle of Summer? This is why Artbeats focuses on hard-to-shoot material, with real production value. None of these are easy to do on demand for $399 a clip, thus the reason for the Artbeats business model.

I can't speak for other stock footage companies. But you can certainly use your own footage even if you sign an exclusive agreement with Artbeats. Not only that, you can still sell the footage on your own website. We just ask that you not undercut our pricing.

Wow really like the reel. I am doing some aerial stuff in a few weeks out near the canadian rockies, I think I will send it your way.

$399 per clip is very cheap, but then it depends what it is. I charge at least order of a magnitude more for my footage. I also have sequences that I would not license even for $100k. They costs much, much more to film.

Generally, it is still cheaper to to license footage than shoot it yourself.

As usual, you get what you pay for.

I just got an email from Artbeats saying that payments to stock shooters can be made via paypal now. This is very convenient for me, since I use paypal so often. I really like how Phil is embracing technology and doing unconventional things. They are doing a lot more on twitter now, too.

good to see a lot of people using red

good to see a lot of people using red

Are people buying a lot of the 4K files or are they just looking for 1080 HD shot on RED?
