  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sadly, this forum has been diff. for awhile now - i'll stop posting.

I appreciate all the pros who've helped me out and answered Pm's. Their professionalism and civility has been a pleasure to behold - with special note to Mr. Mullen. But, the hype over first hand expeirence is bs. Objective voices are shouted down or ignored. Jim and Jarred are gifted and gracious people and I wish them all the best.

I can unstand you very well. And underline your comments about Jim and Jarred.

I also don't understand how someone can judge things just by specs. or a short inspection.

I've shot with Arri cameras the last 20 years, I never had the opportunity to use the D20. All I can say is that the Arris I used were very solid and flawlessly working cameras.

I've shot 3 commercials now with RED. I can say that this camera does a wonderfull job for a digital camera. I cannot comment on solidity (seems to be solid) or long-term qualities. Also, if someone would ask me about the DR of the REDOne I would say: Don't expect miracles. One should stay objective.

BTW, I talked to a Arri salesman a fortnight ago. No disrespect on their side. On the contrary.

Blind fanboyism is the end of any discussion.

I would like to add something more or a fact like this

that for some of "professionals" treat the RED Project

now as a sort "Beggars Banquet"

and that they are feeling more secure and a far away from this

"digital revolution, democratization & peoples mess"

in their fields of "professional superiority",

in a world of "super expensive equipment",

in a shadow of the old and trusted cinematographer's brands.

Conservatives vs. Liberals.

Hope they would get a message from the latest

Soderbergh's movies,

conceptually and technologically.

Gbaby

I hope you don't disappear for good. You were (from the very beginning, together with Ace) one of the best posters.

Did you get your RED, or what?
Anyways: Stay well!!

Damn. This thread wasn`t meant to be negative towards the D21 when I started it. I just wanted to point it out...

That's right Kalone. Don't blame yourself.
It was just an informative link you put up with the best intentions....until Sanjin turned it into some brand competition.

This is what he needs to do on this forum....bait people...and then retorts with his own brand of glib philosophy.

Dave,

Sanjin, i'll respond to this and then go somewhere else. First, you know nothing about me , my production company or my work. We are not Hollywood elites and the reason I first championed red was everything about Art that I respect - democratization of the form, the possible renaissance of content and craft, the entrepreneurship of a single individual giving back to develop choices for many who had the passion but not the means or the access. If one person realized the engagement of art and brought meaning to the form for someone else the camera would be worth it. All of these are what red was emblematic of, for me. Art is the engagement, cinematography the expression, and content the fulfillment. If you look at my history i've tried to get some discussion of the craft beyond the tech going. For some that's not as interesting as the tech stuff. That's fine and dandy, but an elite wouldn't care about contributing in that way. All of which shows that i'm not one. I don't question other peoples places in the profession because someone with a passion and a talent can often be more right than an industry veteran who for whatever reason prejudges . It's a simple rule - treat others how you would like to be treated. Thus, i don't prejudge or make suppositions about others, nor discount their discussion. However, it is encumbent on those who want to take a swing at another companies products to actually see said products in the proper prod. environment. Would you like someone to see an early build of red, read some specs and then go around talking bs about it ? I doubt it. If you've seen D21 footage, talked to the engineers and a dp whose worked with it then by all means feel free to say whatever you want. But, it's counterproductive to judge individuals, products or motivations based on a bias or defensiveness not needed. In the early days of this forum I learned so much from people like Greg Lowry (a true gent) because we were talking real world experience, plus opposing viewpoints expressed in a civil manner. Now people jump all over any objective discussion and assign motives or lack of experience or whatever. This is a great forum, but it'll only be as good as a professional resource if that deosn't happen.

I hope you put as much passion into your projects as goes into other aspects on this forum and I wish you well (despite some of your posts on this forum).

That said, my post wasn't about the forum per se, but more about the D21 and how it should be getting more press or exposure. People should hold off saying it sucks until they see footage and/or use the thing. Arri has a lot of respect in the industry. And it has little to do with $.

Gbabymogul,

don't worry

I'm with you.

Dave,

Hi David, thanks for your nice words. I`ve lost contact to this forum a bit and was shocked how people react nowadays. The whole Scarlet-thing for example went totally insane. I should have known...
Regards, P.

Please. Is this necessary? This place is about technology. Nothing more.
-but ok, I`ll keep to the advice and ignore from now on...

Supposed to be that David is talking to sort of Crocodile Dandy Kindergarden :).

What is the Native ASA on the D21? (at zero or full minus gain)

http://www.arri.com/entry/nab_2008.htm

Looking at the specs I don't see any info on this, and it is a major factor in choosing what to shot on for a project.

It seems nowadays we have to wait to test a unit before this becomes evident. With film stock it was a bit simpler in that it was printed on the can, and the hint was in the name :-)
