I wanted to know the weight of a Technozoom 25-250 that I bought which is arriving tomorrow (turns out it's 22 pounds), so I pulled out Jon Fauer's Arri 35 book to check. I was reminded how much great information is in that book.
If you are coming to red from a video background and have never had the chance to work with 35mm film, I highly recommend you read this book. They have exploded diagrams of the arri follow focus 2-4, how to adjust a mini-worral head, descriptions and tips on all professional heads, tips and practices on lens cleaning, lens comparisons, pages on rod diameter, spacing, etc, etc.
They of course also deal with wireless focus systems, hot heads, batteries, again, etc, etc.
A sample from "Installing Lens Rods"
For most zooms that are to be used 5"x6" mattebox, the rods should protrude behind the camera baseplate rod holder by 1/2" (12mm) on one side and 1/4" on the other side. Use your fingers as a measuring guide. One finger should cover the 1/2" side. Having one rod extend a little farther facilitates mounting of two-holed accessories such as follow focus, lens support, and mattebox.
You get the idea, great book.
Cheers,
Nick
