Hello. How close is the Arri Skypanel to traditional Arri Tungsten lights as far as color and look. I am debating whether to grab used Arri tungsten lights since I love how they look, there is just something about them that is so organic. Does the skypanel have the same look or close to it? I tried looking on youtube but the ones i found doesn't help. Thank you in advance.

Arri Tungsten units are so affordable these days its worth having both.

And the answer is no - Skypanels are not as organic. The CRI of Tungsten filament is 100. Nothing is as good (technically) as a tungsten lamp.

However Skypanels (if you can afford them) are insanely useful, almost a separate category.

Hard vs semi-soft from the get go. Two very different qualities of light based on the fixture. The hard light you can make soft, but you can never make a skypanel mimic a fresnel.

Color wise yes, a true tungsten filament has great color. But sky panels are probably the best you can buy to get as close.

But in reality, jut get sky panels and the get some cheap arri or Mole tungsten units. Have both. Tungsten is cheap.

Wow. Mind blown. Thank you. That is crazy im glad i didnt jump on the rgb lights to soon. I have cheap ones and they look too fake to me. I guess gelled HMI to tungsten is another option. Easier on generators I think

HMI's really aren't "full spectrum", either. Depending on the age of the lamp, you can get noticeable color shift. I own multiple HMI's, but I'm only using them when I need the power(this can mean multiple things).

Even though I'm essentially 100% LED, now, with the exception of some Source Four's and HMI's outside fighting/working with the sun, I'm a tungsten guy at heart. It took me a long time to really embrace LED lights, because I didn't feel that they were "good enough" for close-up work, like interviews until just the last few years. And they still don't equal tungsten. But they are just so damn convenient in so many ways. If all you care about is getting the best skin tones you can, you only have two choices: the sun or tungsten. Everything else is going to be a tradeoff/compromise to some extent. Just for reference, I was still adding/buying tungsten fixtures as late as mid-2016.

My .02 on Skypanels: They are arguably THE industry standard for large soft LED panels, but Gemini's producer better "white light" and skin tones.

I saw that video yesterday. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're just saying you shouldn't white balance your camera to amber color temps (below 3200k) and expect accurate colors. The same tests showed white balancing to tungsten or daylight were successful.

It would be interesting to measure the CRI of a Skypanel s60 paired with, say, a 300w fresnel. That is, the CRI when the two units are used in combination. The Skypanel proving the bulk of the total footcandles, the fresnel boosting the CRI.

Its just so hard to get a generator over here by me for tungsten. I can only run a 1k tungsten on my generator.
