Dear All,
I am planning to have Arri Mattebox for my Red one with Arri Master Prime lens. Any suggestion? I prefer a smaller one, for we mostly film documentary films.
Thanks.

LMB-15 is great for lightweight and can hold up to three 4x5.65 filters. But if you want any to rotate (grads, polarizer) then you may want to look at the MMB-1. It has one rotating 4x5.65 tray and if you use a bellows back (which means you have to be rod-mounted, not clip-on), then you have a choice of 138mm or 4.5" round filters that can rotate as well.

Welcome back Mitch! I thought the day would never come :-)

Thanks, Mitch.

Is it ok for MMB-1 working with Master Prime. A sale told me that for Master Prime, I must use at least MB19. In fact, what is the main differences between Production Mattebox and Light Weight Mattebox. I find out under Production Mattebox category, there are some compact Matteboxes.

Thanks.
King

MMB-1 i fine with Master Primes. If you wish to go particularly wide then you may want an MB-19, but the MMB-1 covers fine down to an 18mm. The MB-19 offers more filter stages plus a swingaway function on the rod mounts, but this also increases cost and weight.

As ARRI (and most others) define it, a Production Mattebox is a rod mounted swingaway mattebox, a Compact Mattebox is rod mounted but not swingaway, and a Light Weight Mattebox is designed only to clamp directly onto the lens.

Do to the size and weight of the Master Primes, I prefer to always use a sizable MB, and for this we have and love the Arri MB28, which has replaced our Arri MB20II.

For light weight clamp on MB, nothing I have found is better then the RED MB Pro, super light and super portable, few friends are also trilled with the O'Connor MB and side handles bundle.

The only problem I have with the MB28 is the mainsail---I mean top flap, which is a giant ARRI commercial.

If you're shooting doco the LMB15 is perfect. You're unlikely to be running pola and even if you need to you can rent/buy a rota pola.

BTW Mitch, I tried to get a rota-pola quote from one of your LA reps and nothing really happened... was hoping not to have to go pay Vantage's insane price ;)

Is the MB28 built like the MB20, or like the MB18?

Cail, please send me a PM or email with your direct contact.

BTW, love your videos. They're ... inspirational. And fun.

Cool Ketch! Like Gunleik, I'm an MB18 fan.

Thanks, Cail. Does MB28 come with the flap (or barndoor when it is for light)? I look at their webpage, and it doesn't show any flap at all.

I've been looking at the LMB-5 to use with 16mm MP. Any downsides to this mattebox?

In fact, I wonder why there are so many sizes of filter trays, like 4x4, 6x6. As we will use three different Master Prime, 25, 50, 150, and all of them have different diameters, does it a matter about the sizes of filter trays? Is it the bigger the better, but just more expensive? If so, how small the tray can I buy in order to save some money?
Thanks in advance.

Top and side flags are available for the MB28.

Not so sure the LMB-5 will cover. The LMB-15 was developed in part to allow for wider lens coverage. I know an LMB-15 three stage clears a 16mm MP in S-35. Not sure about 5K, but it will definitely be better than the LMB-5. If you only need two filter stages then the coverage is even better.

It is from evolution over time. Different products and different needs over the course of many decades. Varying lens designs with larger or smaller front elements, different sensor sizes for light projection coverage, etc.

The MP 25 & 50 both have 114mm fronts and the MP 150 has a 134mm front. 4x5.65 will work just fine for these lenses.
