A group buy for an ARRI MB-20 II!! How cool is that?!
Those of you with long memories will remember this as one of early and incredibly successful group buys in REDUser’s history. Those of you with LONGER memories will remember that ARRI vowed “NEVER AGAIN” after it was done.
With an economy that NO ONE could have guessed would suck this hard, ARRI has decided to revisit this statement, and so they are going to offer a similar deal once again. Eric Johnston, ARRI’s Product Manager for Professional Camera Accessories has once again put something together for everyone that will be a fantastic opportunity in terms of what ARRI usually sells for. And the discount offered will be very similar to last time. For those of you that do not know, if you are hoping for a sub $3,000 MB-20 out of this deal, you can stop hoping.. It’s a great offer, but not a fire sale.
The minimum number of people will be 20. Not sure on the maximum or if there is one. Details of the group buy will be announced at NAB. You can get the info there at the Abel booth, or I will post them on REDUser when I return. The last group buy gave us a very good understanding of the needs of RED users. So we have standardized the package as a three stage mattebox using the most popular combination filter frame (5.65x5.65 + 4x5.65 Vertical) and a 138mm rear bellows with a 114mm threaded connection.
They have asked me to run the group buy, like last time. And like last time, we’re going to use Abel Cine to handle it, they did a great job and we’ve all come to love them and their customer service. That said, I’m gonna ask Mitch to keep an eye on this thread and help me answer any questions you all may have.
Due to the timing of this thing, I will ask ARRI and Abel to take the MB-20 package that will be offered and have it on display at NAB in Abel’s booth. That way if you are interested, you can come by check it out. You can even put your name on the list for the group buy while there. Just ask for Mitch and ask him to see the MB-20 package being offered in the group buy.
Also, if you are on any other sites like this one, feel free to copy this post, you do not have to own a RED to get involved in this.
Finally, let me say, I realize the playing field has changed somewhat since the last group buy. It sometimes feels like everyone and their uncle has built a mattebox, but make no mistake, ARRI is the standard. If you’ve used one, then you understand what I am saying.. If not, NAB is an excellent time to check out all the Matteboxes and see the differences. You’ll understand why ARRI has the rep it does.
The mattebox is a long term investment, not a short term one. It works on every camera (Yes, epic and scarlet), for years to come. Do it right the first time, and you’ll save a ton of money.
More to come. If you have questions, I'll try to answer them!
