As promised... we are now looking at the Arri DRTC dynamic range test. Graeme and Deanan are preparing the images, charts and stuff they have collected and I'll add those to this post when they are done.

It appears that the M-X sensor sits at 13.5 stops on their test at 1st blush.

M-X sensor @ Arri DRTC dynamic range test = 13.5 stops >>> Absolutely fantastic!!!

As many have pointed out before... DR is not the only criteria that should be used to judge the overall performance of a camera. We include price, convenience, service, resolution, color, post workflow, and reliability... among other things. But it is nice to know that the M-X sensor is right up there with the best of the newest.

Jim,

well said.

That's exactly why a lot of people are R1 users.

13.5 stops is pretty spectacular. I hope the 2/3" is within a stop or so of that figure. Any idea yet how it will fair?

I like it when Jim tries his best to sound humble. :yesnod:

When I last asked Jim about the low light capability and DR of 2/3" MX and how badly it would be diminished he said that sensor size isn't everything...intelligent pixel design plays a big part too.

Bearing that in mind it's not too presumptuous to assume that we'll get 12-12.5 stops out of the scarlet.

the MX and the ARRIs are both going to do great I think. Definitely going to lead the pack for a while.....

Four years ago, I don't think I knew anyone who would have believed "in 2010 you'd be saying ARRI....Sony....RED as camera companies leading the way." No one but Jim and his crew probably. I like the fact that this community is here cuz we all get to feel part of it.

Nice work RED!

add the codec to that list, i still cant believe sometimes that i have 500 min of 4k on a 1 tb drive.

how much is that on 35mm (stock and lab costs)?
in these times the difference is huge for me.

13,5 stops is really good!

shooting with the future now kind of.

The Heist

2006 was the year most of us got wind of action on the street. But I am curious how long before that was Jim cooking up the scheme? Vision has been realized. For the none believers <visual>digitus impudicus</visual>.
