I´ve tried to order a follow focus from ARRI here in Munich.

They are backordered quite into the summer. According to the sales guys because of many people like me (us) suddenly entering the market for high end film gear.

He didn´t sound too unhappy about this......

:-)

Your Kidding..
Man if they had the same philosophy as RED, they'd be killing it in sales.

hopeless.

O well . NAB will have lots of copy cats there. Arri isn't the be all and end all. but the product is good none the less.

You are totaly wrong.
Arri has a long term view for business while Red has a big chance of burning out in a short time (2-3 years).
Red owners should consider that.

With ARRI´s kind of quality, they have and will stay in business for a very long time.
Red´s success is because it is a disruptive technology.

Same thing happend to the audio world some 18 years ago.
Digidesign (ProTools) did it.
And is still very strong.

Hi,

Sony's introduction of Betacam camcorders was fairly disruptive to television news at about the same time. News pictures tended to be shot on Ektachrome 7240 Video News Film!

hi jochen and the other red folk,

do you find the arri followfocuses really well fabricated?
sorry of my dumb question, i only have had a handfull of ff-4 followfocuses (they where used) but all had "game" (in german you would say spiel) so that it was even a difficulter job for a AC to follow the focus.
somebody told me that the followfocuses from arri have a rubber band inside, and this would be the reason why it don't takes long time that they seem very used and have game. look at number 25 http://www.arri-shop.de:1080/catalo...ssy&k_vari=&k_ver=&image=0&k_lfdnr=&nodeId=43

i ever had better feelings with chrosziel. don't have tried other tools than arri and chrosziel.

perhaps somebody else have had same feelings with arri follow focuses, or is it just me who got every time those bad ones.

arri is a big name, and nothin against arri. but in fact of follow focuses it seems to me they only got a big name branded on it.

thx and greetz, manolo

First - I think RED has the potential to (and will) become a real big player, and for the long term.

Now, the ARRI FF. Love 'em and IMO it was the only choice.

However, I'm waiting for the 19mm adaptor for both the FF and the MB-20II which are back ordered. So I have to settle for no filters and hand focusing while they sit in cases.

Here in the US, we call that a "Game Changer". Metaphorically speaking, Jim hopped into a Semi Truck and drove it through the front window of Filmmaking.

I dont know if i can agree.
Since many, MANY years, me and many others have been telling arri to offer us something like red now does, and they didnt get it. Now, in the 35mm camera space, red is the new market leader, in sales and i suppose also in volume - red should easily deliver camera systerms for >100.000.000$ this year. I dont think Arri will have a chance to grab back its market share, and they have no alternative to red - the D21 sure isnt one. It will find its customers, guestimated maybe 1-5% of reds sales.

But: Thats the camera dept. Arriscan is lightly affected... but:
The other arri divisions light, rental, laser, optics are affected in a VERY positive way by red.

OTOH, i have to admit that i really hope that the new management of arri now corrects the strategy - i always had a softspot for arri and several member of my family have worked there (looooong time ago, the 50, 60ties).

In the 35mm camera marketspace: the damage has been done.
You cant turn back the clock.
Arri, Panavision, Aaton, Sony and Panavision left the door -wiiiide- open for a decided and dedicated new player, and have let become red 35mm digital marketleader almost without -any- defence, while the sirens have been on for over 2 years.

steenbeck (before avid), ernemann/bauer (before christie), its sad that the german local cinematic champs so often missed the wakeup calls when mechanics are turning to microchips.

I hope you are right about Red potential. It is also part of where the movie industry is going to, and it is going to lower budgets. I don't think we will see many of 100 million dollars movies but rather around 10 and below. Then a quick theatrical nationwide release for 2-3 weeks and moving on. This is where Red can fits in. However, I really don't see Red has a strong long term developing strategy. what I see now is a company that release a trial under develop tool and expect the users to finish the job by figuring somehow how it is going to work.

About the matte box, why don't get an Arri clip on matte box till the production matte box will be ready. Get LMB-5 with some adapter rings and you set to start shooting with your Red and lenses.

Hi Manolo,

Do you mean the Arri follow focus has "play" rather then "game" (might be a translation confusion?) If a follow focus has "play" it means the ring rocks back & forward a bit without moving the lens (making your marks written on the focus disc pretty useless). This is true of some of the older FF3's (they probably just need a bit of servicing) but I've always found the FF4's to be completely solid in this respect (plus you've got the ability of going straight onto lightweight handheld 15mm bars, it's lighter than the FF3 but it doesn't have the two speed feature). All in all, IMHO, Arri's at the top of the tree when it comes to follow focus.

interesting point about budgets.
but does the equipment make the big part of the budget?

I think for the next 5-10 years nothing will change with the budgets as long as CGI, Production Design and A-Rate Actors costs so much.

Tom Cruise doesnt care if COLOR is included in FCS2..or Scratch will be given as a gift from Lucas to everybody while he dances ChaChaCha....Tom Cruise will still earn 10-20 Million Dollars ( crazy that he already earns that much for 2-4 months of work)....but i hope i am wrong.

hi david,
thanks for the correction, yes i mean "play" :-)
just to say, i had those "play"problems also with different FF4's.
the cool thing in arri FF's , like you mentioned, is the two speed feature. i have never seen this in other products.

The cost of film and camera equipment pretty low in hollywood films. Red will lower foremost commercial-industry prices and the number of produced feature films in my view. Together with independent film distribution over the internet (still hoping for a good service à la itunes here), there's the new possibility for creators for pulling out good films with keeping all distributing rights at the same time without selling them ever to a studio.

http://www.indieflix.com/ is such a model and it's only a question of time untill apple or other big players jump in.

Arri has a long term view for business while Red has a big chance of burning out in a short time (2-3 years).
Red owners should consider that.

I wouldn't bet your own money on that outcome now that Jim's out of the Oakley business - what's a technophile, camera-loving billionaire going to do with his time if not make even better cameras, smaller cameras (Scarlet), affordable 4K projectors and maybe even monitors etc etc? Sounds like he's going to be busy for a few more years unless he just gets bored with it all and moves on to making electric cars or something.

Apple showed that it's more important to address costumers needs and improving products around this needs than anything else. Even that every other camera company seems to look at this converse and acts like a fool helps Red enough to establish itself as new leader.

Hi Manolo,

well, I´not a cameraman, so I´ve asked the 1st AC of my last project.
According to him (Emanuel Schwermer - he´s very good), every AC here is comfortable with an ARRI FF4 or 5.

(But because the camera had to go out on a big rental, I bought a Chrosziel)

Jochen

The LMB-15 is very lightweight and is designed to clear the vast majority of lenses. It is an excellent choice and we have them in stock at special reduser prices. We'll also be selling them off the floor at NAB so feel free to stop by the Abel booth (C8508) to check them out.
