  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ARRI ALEXA in-camera recording using AVID’s DNxHD MXF file format

Well it´s Red, and Red listens to there customers, so if demand is high enough i think there is a chance RED builds this module.
There are cases where ProRes444, 422 or DNxHD is just fine, but there is no money or time to transcode on set, and thats one point Alexa wins.
You can argument about higher resolution, higher frame rates, but what counts is that you can take your files from the camera and go straight to editing.
Pix and Samurai are nice, but i like to have a module designed by Red which is able of recording the slomo shoots as well, and samples from the Epic Data Stream and not from the HD-SDI Stream.
I also love the idea of having the RAW file in parallel if there are some shots which need VFX work.

BS. Following that logic, the Alexa is a great color camera – in SD resolution.

Actually the ARRI Alexa utilizes a 3K+ Bayer sensor which downscales to 2K/HD for proper 4:4:4 color resolution.

If you'd like to join the discussion check out the "Is R3D 4:4:4 or 4:2:2?" thread.

You guys are goofballs.

We'll agree on this: The EPIC is a gorgeous Black & White 4K camera. They should have shot "The Artist" with it.

Perhaps you could check out Stuarts link as suggested. We try not to feed trolls the here....

@Max
Well, you can play back 120 fps with a beefy machine. But I don't see any encoder doing 120 fps in RT for either codec. Do you have a link for me?
